This tour is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Walking is moderate and limited to short, mostly flat trails at each stop. Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes, sun protection, and bring a reusable water bottle. No meals are provided, but guests are welcome to bring water and snacks. The tour accommodates up to 4 guests per group. This tour is not wheelchair accessible. As of January 1, 2025, the operator no longer purchases park entrance fees on behalf of guests. You will need your own park pass or can purchase entry at the gate ($15 per person or $55 for an annual pass covering up to 4 people). Check in at least 15 minutes before the 8:00 AM departure time.

Your morning begins at the Joshua Tree Excursions office in the town of Joshua Tree, where you will meet your guide and board a comfortable shuttle. After a brief introduction and overview of the day ahead, you will depart for Joshua Tree National Park.

Cholla Cactus Garden

Your first stop sits at the transition zone between the Mojave and Colorado deserts inside Joshua Tree National Park. The Cholla Cactus Garden is a short, flat loop trail that winds through a dense concentration of teddy bear cholla, a cactus nicknamed for its fuzzy appearance but armed with barbed spines that detach at the slightest touch. In the morning light, the cholla seem to glow golden against the desert floor. Your guide will explain how the cholla uses its detachable segments to reproduce, how plants and animals have adapted to survive in this arid landscape, and why this particular spot supports such a high density of cacti. The walk takes about 15 to 20 minutes and is one of the most photographed spots in Joshua Tree National Park.

Skull Rock

From the Cholla Cactus Garden, the shuttle heads deeper into Joshua Tree National Park's high desert, where the landscape shifts to towering monzogranite boulders and groves of namesake Joshua Trees. Skull Rock is one of the park's most recognizable formations, shaped by centuries of water erosion into the unmistakable profile of a human skull. Your guide will share insights into the geological forces that sculpted these rocks and point out features you might miss on your own.

Arch Rock

Just a short drive from Skull Rock, Arch Rock is a striking natural granite arch formed by the same weathering processes visible throughout the park. You will have time to walk the short trail to the arch, photograph it from multiple angles, and explore the surrounding boulder field.

Ohlsen Ranch or Cap Rock Nature Trail

Depending on the day and group interest, your guide will take you to one of two stops. Ohlsen Ranch (also known as Wonderland Ranch) is a photogenic set of pioneer-era ruins near the Wonderland of Rocks, offering a window into the lives of early settlers who tried to make a home in this harsh desert environment. Alternatively, the Cap Rock Nature Trail is an easy loop that winds among sculpted boulders and Joshua Trees, with interpretive signs explaining the desert ecosystem.

Keys View

The tour concludes at Keys View, Joshua Tree National Park's premier overlook. Perched at 5,185 feet on the crest of the Little San Bernardino Mountains, Keys View offers sweeping panoramic views of the Coachella Valley, the San Andreas Fault, the Salton Sea, and the towering peaks of Mount San Jacinto and Mount San Gorgonio. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Signal Mountain in Mexico, roughly 90 miles to the south. Your guide will point out geological features and share the story of the Keys family, whose ranch nearby remains one of the park's most important historical sites.
