Paddle Murrells Inlet’s salt marsh and watch for coastal wildlife
2 Hours
Explore Murrells Inlet by kayak on a 2-hour tour through a salt marsh connected to the ocean inlet. Paddle among cord grass and keep an eye out for birds and marine life along the way.
The marsh connects to an ocean inlet, which can bring higher winds and stronger currents. Some kayaking experience is preferred but not required.
No charge to cancel with at least 1 hour notice before launching. Refunds are only available if you cancel more than 24 hours ahead of time. The operator may cancel at their discretion due to bad weather or other circumstances at no charge. Special policies apply to private groups.
Arrive 20–25 minutes before your departure time.
Bring sunglasses with a strap, sunscreen, bug repellent, a waterproof or disposable camera in a zip lock bag, and plenty of liquids to drink (there’s room for a soft-sided or small 6-pack type cooler in your kayak). Bring any personal emergency medications you may need, and leave valuables you don’t want to risk dropping into the water locked in your car or at home.
Wear a brimmed hat, cap, or sun visor; footwear you don’t mind getting wet; and clothes you don’t mind getting muddy or wet. In warmer months, come ready to swim (optional). For cool mornings, dress in layers; for cool and windy weather, consider gloves and a windbreaker.
Murrells Inlet, SC
Huntington Beach State Park sits just across the water from Murrells Inlet, and its sprawling salt marsh is the very landscape you will glide through on this two-hour tour. The park is one of the most celebrated coastal preserves on the South Carolina coast, protecting miles of tidal creeks, maritime forest, and brackish lagoons that shelter alligators, herons, egrets, and the occasional bottlenose dolphin. Setting out from Murrells Inlet, you trade the bustle of the boardwalk for the hush of grasses bending in the breeze, with Huntington Beach State Park's wild shoreline framing the horizon.
As the boat slips into the inlet, your guide points out the rhythms of the marsh that defines Huntington Beach State Park: the way the tide exposes oyster beds, the fiddler crabs scuttling along the banks, the osprey nests perched above the spartina. You will smell the salt and pluff mud, hear the rustle of marsh grass, and watch for the slow ripple of a gator sliding into a tidal pool. Compared with the open ocean tours nearby, this calm-water route is intimate and unhurried, giving you time to soak in the details that make the waters around Huntington Beach State Park feel untouched.
This tour is perfect for nature lovers, families with curious kids, photographers, and travelers who want to understand the Lowcountry beyond its restaurants and beaches. Birders especially will appreciate the variety of species that thrive in and around Huntington Beach State Park, while first-time visitors get a gentle, narrated introduction to the ecosystem. If you are looking for a peaceful, scenic way to connect with the natural side of Murrells Inlet, this salt marsh tour delivers Huntington Beach State Park at its most serene.
Black River Outdoors consistently delivers excellent guided kayak experiences thanks to standout guides like Mike, Spencer, Matt, and Steve. Reviewers rave about how knowledgeable and enthusiastic the guides are, whether you're paddling through salt marshes spotting wildlife, exploring the historic Waccamaw River, or fishing for redfish and flounder. The guides excel at making everyone feel comfortable and safe, even helping struggling paddlers and navigating sudden weather changes. The naturalist partnerships add extra educational depth to the tours, and families particularly appreciate how patient the guides are with beginners and kids. The tours themselves offer diverse options from 2-hour salt marsh paddles to 4-hour river adventures with island stops. Wildlife sightings are frequent - birds, turtles, and various marine life keep things interesting. The kayaking is generally easy-paced with plenty of stops, making it accessible for first-timers. One reviewer did encounter a serious booking mix-up where their confirmed reservation wasn't on the schedule, and equipment occasionally shows wear, though it remains functional. Overall though, the combination of skilled guides, beautiful scenery, and well-organized tours makes this a popular choice for both visitors and repeat customers.
It was great to have been guided by Spencer yesterday on the Waccamaw River Tour. We had a nice group, favorable weather and calm waters. Hoping to get out with Black River a few more times this season.
