Snorkel the crystal-clear waters of Molokini Crater or Coral Gardens on this afternoon catamaran trip from Ma'alaea Harbor. The 55-foot Malolo carries you out to one of Maui's premier snorkeling destinations, where underwater visibility can reach up to 150 feet and more than 250 species of tropical fish swim above vibrant coral reefs. All snorkel gear, flotation devices, and lunch are included.
This afternoon departure is one of the few Molokini Crater snorkel options on Maui, and it is the perfect way to spend an afternoon on the water without an early morning wake-up.
Check in at Boss Frog's at Ma'alaea Harbor 30 minutes before departure (12:30 PM). Tour time is 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Snorkel location (Molokini Crater or Coral Gardens) is determined daily by the captain based on weather and ocean swell. The tour is not wheelchair accessible. Basic swimming ability is recommended. All participants must sign a liability waiver at check-in; minors require a parent or guardian signature. One free infant or toddler (ages 3 and under) is included with each adult booking; additional toddlers must be booked at the child rate. Alcoholic beverages are available for purchase after snorkeling ($3 per drink, ages 21 and older with valid photo ID). Optional equipment rentals include wetsuits, prescription masks, and underwater cameras. Bring your own towel, sunscreen (reef-safe recommended), and a dry change of clothes. Paid parking is available at Maui Harbor Shops / Maui Ocean Center and Ma'alaea Harbor (10 to 15 minute walk to the boat slip).
This is a typical itinerary for this afternoon snorkel tour. The snorkel destination is determined daily by the captain based on weather and ocean conditions.
Check in at Boss Frog's Dive and Surf at Ma'alaea Harbor (300 Ma'alaea Road, Building 2, Shop #2N, Wailuku, HI 96793) by 12:30 PM. A Malolo crew member will be waiting at a table outside the store to help with check-in and distribute liability waivers. After check-in, walk down to the harbor to board the Malolo.
The Malolo departs Ma'alaea Harbor at approximately 1:00 PM. As the catamaran cruises out of the harbor and across Ma'alaea Bay, the West Maui Mountains rise to the north and Haleakala Volcano dominates the skyline to the southeast. Your captain and crew provide a safety briefing, distribute snorkel gear, and share information about the marine environment you are about to explore. During whale season (December through April), keep watch from the deck for humpback whales that migrate to Maui's warm waters each winter to mate and calve.
The captain selects the day's snorkel site based on wind, swell, and current conditions. When conditions allow, the Malolo anchors inside Molokini Crater, a crescent-shaped volcanic islet located roughly 3 miles off Maui's south shore. Molokini Crater is a state marine life conservation district and a federally protected seabird sanctuary, and its sheltered interior creates calm, clear water ideal for snorkeling. The crater was formed approximately 230,000 years ago during an undersea volcanic eruption, and it is one of only three volcanic calderas of its kind in the world. Underwater, the reef inside Molokini Crater supports more than 250 species of tropical fish, including yellow tang, parrotfish, cornetfish, surgeonfish, and the Hawaiian state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapua'a, along with 38 species of coral. On clear days, visibility inside Molokini Crater can exceed 150 feet.
When afternoon trade winds make conditions at Molokini Crater too rough, the captain redirects to Coral Gardens, a protected reef off Maui's west side. Coral Gardens is consistently rated among the world's top snorkel sites and features dense, colorful coral formations teeming with tropical fish and frequent Hawaiian green sea turtle sightings.
At either location, you have approximately one hour in the water. The crew provides instruction for first-time snorkelers and is available in the water for assistance. Optional rental equipment includes wetsuits, prescription optical masks, and underwater digital cameras.
Full refund with 24 hours' notice. Full refund if the operator cancels due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. No-shows will be charged the full price.

Molokini Crater sits 3 miles off Maui's south coast, a crescent-shaped volcanic remnant rising from the channel between Maui and the island of Kahoolawe. Formed roughly 230,000 years ago, the crater's submerged caldera has been a protected marine sanctuary for decades, allowing its reef ecosystem to develop with minimal human disturbance. The result is one of the clearest and most biodiverse snorkeling environments in Hawaii, with more than 250 fish species, 38 coral species, and underwater visibility that regularly exceeds 100 feet.
This afternoon snorkel tour aboard the Malolo is one of the few options on Maui that runs in the afternoon, making it a smart choice for visitors who want to keep their mornings free for hiking, beach time, or simply sleeping in. The 55-foot catamaran is designed for stability and comfort, with wide stairways that make getting in and out of the water easy, spacious trampolines for sunbathing on the ride out, and a freshwater shower for rinsing off after your swim. The crew handles everything from gear fitting to in-water guidance, so the experience works well for both first-time snorkelers and experienced swimmers looking to explore Molokini Crater's reef.
Whether the captain takes you to Molokini Crater or redirects to Coral Gardens based on the day's conditions, you are snorkeling at one of Maui's two most celebrated underwater sites. Families with children, couples on vacation, and solo travelers all find this tour to be a relaxed, well-organized way to spend an afternoon on the water. During winter months, the chance to spot humpback whales from the deck adds an extra dimension to the cruise that makes this more than just a snorkel trip.
Malolo delivers solid snorkeling at some of the best value pricing on Maui. Most guests rave about the crew's friendliness and professionalism, with staff members like Ashley, Joe the photographer, and various captains earning specific shoutouts for making families feel welcome and safe. The underwater visibility at Molokini Crater consistently impresses, and many appreciate that they offer afternoon tours when other companies don't run. The experience does come with some quirks worth noting. Group sizes can push 45-50 people, which feels crowded to some guests. A few reviewers mentioned captains with overly stern tones around safety rules, though this seems captain-dependent. The gratuity prompting bothers some people, with direct requests for specific tip amounts. Food is fairly basic—pastries for breakfast, pre-made sandwiches for lunch—and vegetarian accommodations have been hit or miss, though one recent reviewer had a positive veggie experience. Weather can redirect trips from Molokini to alternate spots, but most guests still enjoy those backup locations. Despite minor hiccups, families with young kids consistently report great experiences, and the photographer gets high marks for capturing memories.
Had an amazing time snorkeling and we even saw a whale and her calf on the way back to the harbor. The captain stopped so everyone could see and was a font of knowledge. The crew Andy and Ashley were great too. The weather wouldn't permit us to go to Molokini Crater, but fortunately the Captain had another reef we could go to
