Portland Head Light stands as Maine's most photographed lighthouse, perched dramatically on the rocky cliffs of Cape Elizabeth where it has guided ships safely into Casco Bay since 1791. Commissioned by George Washington himself, this iconic beacon offers sweeping Atlantic views, crashing surf against granite ledges, and a slice of maritime history that defines coastal New England. While Portland Head Light sits just outside the downtown core, exploring Portland's storied streets aboard a vintage fire engine sets the perfect tone for appreciating the seafaring spirit that built this lighthouse and the working harbor it has long protected.
The Portland Vintage Fire Engine Tour rolls through the cobblestone lanes of the Old Port and along the historic waterfront in a beautifully restored open-air fire engine, with the salty breeze in your hair and the clang of the bell announcing your arrival. Your guide shares tales of the Great Fire of 1866, the rum-running days, and the brick warehouses that once stored cargo bound for ports far beyond Portland Head Light. You will pass landmarks tied to Portland's shipbuilding past, hear stories of the fishermen and lightkeepers who shaped the city, and see the same harbor waters that vessels still navigate today using Portland Head Light as their northern marker.
This tour is ideal for families with curious kids, couples looking for something memorable, and history lovers who would rather learn through stories than placards. Anyone planning to drive out to Portland Head Light afterward will find the experience adds rich context to that visit, turning a simple lighthouse photo stop into a deeper understanding of why this stretch of coast mattered so much to early America. Climb aboard the fire engine, soak up the city that grew up alongside Portland Head Light, and let Portland reveal itself one breezy, bell-ringing block at a time.
This vintage fire truck tour delivers exactly what you'd hope for: engaging guides who know their stuff, comfortable open-air seating, and a fun way to cover a lot of ground in about an hour. The guides consistently earn praise for being knowledgeable, funny, and genuinely caring about their guests. One visitor mentioned receiving exceptional kindness when arriving flustered, while families rave about how accommodating the staff is with kids and even well-behaved dogs. The converted fire truck itself is part of the charm, with covered bench seating arranged in a U-shape and a screen for historical photos. Pro tip from multiple reviewers: sit on the left side (driver's side) since most sights are viewed from that angle, saving your neck some work. The tour hits both sides of Portland, including harbor views and historic neighborhoods, making it perfect for getting oriented or experiencing parts of the city you might not walk to. Even locals found it worthwhile, which says plenty about the quality of information shared. For the price and duration, it's consistently described as excellent value and family-friendly fun.
This is a wonderful tour ! It's super fun to ride around in the back of the old fire truck, the seats are comfy, the tour guide and driver are awesome and entertaining. The tour includes so much history and fun facts about portland and is totally worth it. My parents and I really enjoyed it. My dog bella was also allowed to join (the workers loved her and were so sweet to her ) and she seemed to really enjoy the tour because she could look out the side of the fire truck and watch lol . Great and quick tour well worth the price ! Highly recommend for anyone wanting to know the history of portland maine !
