Island Cruises delivers consistently excellent nature tours thanks to their knowledgeable local captains who clearly love what they do. The husband-and-wife teams (including Eli and Robin, Matt, and Hutch) stand out for their genuine passion and expertise about Bass Harbor, the islands, and Maine coastal life. Guests rave about the wildlife sightings—harbor seals, grey seals, bald eagles, porpoises, and even occasional whales and puffins are common. The captains have a knack for knowing exactly where to find the animals and thoughtfully rotate the boat so everyone gets a good view, which is a nice touch that doesn't go unnoticed. What makes these tours special is how personal and authentic they feel. The guides share local history and stories without over-narrating, striking that perfect balance between informative and relaxed. Multiple reviewers mention this compares favorably to larger tour operations and ranks among the best guided experiences they've taken anywhere. The Bass Harbor Head lighthouse views from the water get special mentions, and families with young children report everyone had a great time. Whether you book a two-hour nature cruise or a private charter, expect a genuinely memorable experience on the water.
