Fast Raft Ocean Safaris invites you to experience Monterey Bay’s wildlife from an intimate, six-passenger adventure raft. Their quiet, low-profile vessel Ranger sits inches above the sea, giving every guest a front-row seat to hum...
Fast Raft delivers an intimate whale watching experience that consistently blows away visitors. The small zodiac-style boat accommodates just six passengers, creating a personalized adventure that feels worlds apart from crowded tourist vessels. Captains like Kate, Don, Brian, Kay, and Erica earn specific praise for their extensive marine biology knowledge and genuine passion for the animals. They recognize individual whales by their tail markings, use underwater listening devices to hear whale songs, and regularly cut the engine to allow curious wildlife to approach naturally. The low-to-water positioning puts you incredibly close to the action, where you can hear whales exhaling and see stunning detail during breaches. The wildlife encounters are exceptional. Guests regularly spot humpback whales, orcas, dolphins, sea lions, and diverse seabirds, often in surprising abundance. The crew sends helpful prep emails about layering clothes, which proves essential since conditions on the water are significantly colder than on shore. The ride can be quite bumpy and fast, so seasickness medication is worth considering if you're prone to motion sickness. One reviewer mentioned missing a naturalist guide on their trip, resulting in fewer explanations, though this seems to be an isolated incident. The departure from Moss Landing offers quick access to prime viewing areas, and the entire experience strikes visitors as authentic rather than touristy.
We've been on whale watching tours with several companies (USA, Canada, Spain), and Fast Raft is one of the better ones. The tour lasted a good three hours. Our guide, Kate, was very friendly and organized. You could tell she enjoyed her job. Regarding clothing: Yes, even on a warm day in May, it was quite cold on the water. We wore warm hats and warm, windproof jackets, and it wasn't too much. After three hours, we were cold. We saw a lot. Thank you for the wonderful time!
