Spend 6–8 hours spotting more marine wildlife from a low-to-the-water open boat
6–8 hours
Captain and naturalist, Gear
Explore Monterey Bay on an all-day marine wildlife expedition designed for more time on the water and more opportunities to search for species. Ride on an open, low-to-the-water boat that’s set up for wildlife viewing and photography.
Ages 12+ only. There is no enclosed restroom on the boat (a camping-style bucket toilet is available). Parking is paid separately ($8 cash) on the honor system.
Trips may be shortened due to weather with a proportionate refund. Cancel with 72 hours notice for a refund if you cannot reschedule. Less than 72 hours is at their discretion. Full refund if the operator cancels and rescheduling is not possible. No-shows are charged full price.
Come prepared for seasickness. The boat will not return early because of seasickness, so you should have prior open-ocean experience and already know what works for you (some people need prescription medication).
Pack a picnic lunch plus enough snacks and water (or other beverages) for the full day. Do not bring glass containers, messy/gooey/crumbly snacks, Cannabis, or sharp knives.
Dress very warmly in layers. Wear long pants and closed shoes, and bring a fleece or warm jacket plus a hat that will stay on in the wind (gloves and sunscreen are also recommended). You can borrow windproof-waterproof jackets and pants.
Moss Landing, California
Fast Raft delivers an intimate whale watching experience that consistently blows away visitors. The small zodiac-style boat accommodates just six passengers, creating a personalized adventure that feels worlds apart from crowded tourist vessels. Captains like Kate, Don, Brian, Kay, and Erica earn specific praise for their extensive marine biology knowledge and genuine passion for the animals. They recognize individual whales by their tail markings, use underwater listening devices to hear whale songs, and regularly cut the engine to allow curious wildlife to approach naturally. The low-to-water positioning puts you incredibly close to the action, where you can hear whales exhaling and see stunning detail during breaches. The wildlife encounters are exceptional. Guests regularly spot humpback whales, orcas, dolphins, sea lions, and diverse seabirds, often in surprising abundance. The crew sends helpful prep emails about layering clothes, which proves essential since conditions on the water are significantly colder than on shore. The ride can be quite bumpy and fast, so seasickness medication is worth considering if you're prone to motion sickness. One reviewer mentioned missing a naturalist guide on their trip, resulting in fewer explanations, though this seems to be an isolated incident. The departure from Moss Landing offers quick access to prime viewing areas, and the entire experience strikes visitors as authentic rather than touristy.
My family of 4 went out with Kate and Don yesterday and could not have asked for a better experience. No seasickness despite bumpy waters and a VERY up close and personal experience with humpbacks! In fact we got “stuck” surrounded by a pod and ended up sitting in one spot for about an hour literally in touching distance of about 5 whales. The size of their boat and their knowledge is a completely different experience than the large vessels and so very worth it. Just book with them, you will not be disappointed!
