Canyonlands By Night
The Eye of the Whale Arch sits tucked away in the quieter corners of Arches National Park, a sandstone formation whose curved opening genuinely resembles the soulful eye of a great whale gazing out across the desert. While crowds gather at the more famous Delicate Arch and Landscape Arch, the Eye of the Whale Arch rewards those willing to venture a little further along the pavement and short approach trails that connect the park's accessible highlights. Its location in the Herdina Park area places it among red rock fins and weathered hoodoos, giving you a sense of the geological storytelling that makes this corner of Utah so unforgettable.
On this combo tour, the Eye of the Whale Arch becomes one of the memorable stops as you travel the paved scenic drive that threads through the park, pausing at viewpoints where guides explain the slow choreography of erosion, salt domes, and time that shaped these formations. You will feel the warm sandstone under your fingertips, catch the resinous scent of juniper drifting on the breeze, and hear the desert quiet that settles between gusts of wind. As the day softens into evening, the rocks around the Eye of the Whale Arch glow in shades of copper and rust, setting the mood for the sound and light show that follows, where projections and narration bring the park's ancient history vividly to life.
This experience suits families looking for an easy yet awe-filled outing, couples chasing a romantic desert sunset, and photographers hunting for that perfect frame where the Eye of the Whale Arch catches the last warm light of day. History lovers will appreciate the layered stories of Ancestral Puebloan presence and pioneer exploration, while first-time visitors get a comfortable, well-paced introduction to Arches without strenuous hiking. Come ready to slow down, look closely, and let the Eye of the Whale Arch and its surrounding wonders leave a lasting imprint on your Utah memories.
This family-owned operation delivers a memorable Moab experience that guests consistently rave about. The dinner cruise stands out for its generous buffet with plenty of choices, and the friendly staff creates a welcoming atmosphere from start to finish. Guides like Tasha and Richard get special mentions for being knowledgeable, funny, and genuinely engaging. The UTV sunset tours offer surprisingly exhilarating rides through steep terrain, while the river cruises provide a unique perspective of canyon walls illuminated against the night sky. Most visitors love the overall package, though a few noted the narrative leans heavily into Mormon pioneer history with what some felt was a one-sided perspective on indigenous peoples. The light show, while cool, struck some as simpler than expected. A couple guests wished for better beverage options on the premium tour and more familiar music choices during entertainment. Still, the overwhelming majority find it well-organized and worth doing, with many calling it a highlight of their Moab trip. The hot chocolate waiting after cold-weather cruises is a nice touch that shows the thoughtfulness here.
