Bodie Island Lighthouse
The Bodie Island Lighthouse rises from the marshes of the Outer Banks like a striped sentinel, its black and white bands instantly recognizable against the wide Carolina sky. Standing 156 feet tall and first lit in 1872, the Bodie Island Lighthouse has guided mariners along this stretch of the Atlantic for more than 150 years, and it remains one of the most photographed landmarks on the North Carolina coast. Paddling toward it from the water gives you a perspective most visitors never get, trading the boardwalk view for a quiet glide through the surrounding salt marsh and tidal creeks that frame the lighthouse grounds.
On this clear kayak tour, the transparent hull beneath you reveals the shallow ecosystem that thrives at the base of Bodie Island Lighthouse, from darting baitfish to drifting blue crabs and the occasional ray gliding across the sandy bottom. Your guide leads the group through calm protected waters, sharing stories about the keepers who once tended the light, the shipwrecks that gave this coast its haunting nickname, and the wildlife that calls the marsh home. Egrets stalk the reeds, ospreys circle overhead, and the lighthouse itself keeps watch in the distance, growing larger as you paddle closer. The scent of salt and pine, the soft splash of paddles, and the open horizon make the experience feel worlds away from the busy beaches just over the dunes.
This tour is ideal for families, couples, and first-time kayakers who want a gentle, scenic outing with a strong sense of place. Photographers will love the unobstructed sightlines of Bodie Island Lighthouse from the water, while history buffs will appreciate the maritime context their guide weaves into every stop. If you are looking for a way to experience the Outer Banks that goes beyond the standard photo from the parking lot, paddling a clear kayak in the shadow of Bodie Island Lighthouse is a memory that lingers long after you are back on shore.
If you're looking for a kayaking experience on the Outer Banks that feels more like paddling with a knowledgeable friend than going on a tourist excursion, this is your spot. Travis, the guide who leads these tours, gets consistent praise for making everyone feel comfortable and unhurried. Whether you're a first-timer gripping your paddle a bit too tight or someone who's been kayaking for years, he adjusts the pace and provides just the right amount of instruction without being overbearing. The setting itself is gorgeous. Most tours circle around Bodie Lighthouse and the surrounding sound, with wildlife sightings including stingrays, crabs, and egrets along the way. The clear-bottom kayaks available for sunset paddles are a particular hit, giving you views both above and below the waterline. What really stands out across these reviews is how Travis shares local history and insider tips about the area, turning what could be just a paddle into a more enriching experience. Groups mention feeling like they got personalized attention even when booking wasn't full, and the location is conveniently accessible from the northern beaches. Tours typically run about an hour and a half, which seems to be the sweet spot for seeing plenty without wearing yourself out.
We turned out to be the only 2 people on the tour and had a great time. Travis was so friendly and pointed out wildlife along the way (sting ray, crabs, egret). He also shared some tips for things to do in the area. Thank you!
