We recently went on a walking tour of the Tremé neighborhood in New Orleans if you're interested in exploring the city beyond the French Quarter, this tour is an absolute must-do. Our guide, Daynel, was excellent. Her knowledge was impressive, and we think what truly set the tour apart was her personal connection to the neighborhood; she shared stories of her own family's history and wove that into the overall story of Tremé. This was not a tour where it was just facts and dates but an immersive experience of this historical neighborhood. The tour started at Kermit’s Lounge, where Daniel gave us an overview of Kermit Ruffins and his connection to Tremé. We walked past historic music halls and homes of jazz legends including the statue of Louis Armstrong. As jazz music lovers, this was highlight for us. Daynel spoke candidly about the challenges the community has faced, from Hurricane Katrina's devastation to the ongoing struggles with gentrification. This really provided a balanced and honest perspective on modern-day Tremé. This was not a "tourist trap" experience. We truly were walking through a living, breathing community. We made a quick stop at a local bar which had a great selection of cocktails and while we enjoyed our beverages, Daynel continued to talk about Tremé. Overall, Daynel’s passion and personal stories made the history come alive on this tour. Since it was a group of 5, the tour allowed for questions and an intimate experience. We learned about a new section of NOLA and another part of its unique heritage. This Tremé tour was a highlight of our New Orleans visit. If you want more than just beads and booze, book a tour here.
