Hike 8–11 miles across the Root Glacier with a full-day guided outing
8 hours
Guide, Crampons
Explore the Root Glacier in Wrangell-St. Elias on an 8-hour hike designed for travelers with solid fitness. Expect a trail approach plus varied glacial terrain.
A certain level of physical fitness is required, and shorts are not allowed. You must bring rain gear (jacket and pants), light gloves, and sturdy hiking boots with ankle support. Guide gratuity is not included; if you didn’t prepay, plan to tip by cash or credit card (normal range 10–20%)
Your payment is fully refundable up to 48 hours prior to the start of the trip. Within 48 hours, there is no refund for cancellations. No-shows will be charged the full price. Full refund if the operator cancels due to dangerous conditions.
Plan to hike 8–11 miles total. You’ll hike about 4 miles on an out-and-back trail to the glacier, including a 300 ft hill. The last 1/4 mile of trail is not well-maintained and includes a ~200 ft descent/ascent on steep, loose rock over ice, and the glacial terrain is more varied and challenging than the half-day hike.
Bring layered clothing, rain gear (jacket and pants), light gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, sturdy hiking boots with ankle support (or other sturdy walking shoes), a water bottle, lunch or snacks, and a backpack large enough to carry your layers, food, water, and the crampons you’ll be loaned. Do not wear shorts.
No. Bring your own lunch or snacks unless you purchased Snack Packs as part of your trip.

The guides here clearly make all the difference. Reviewers consistently praise staff by name—Benjamin, Caroline, Stella, Pat, Roy, and many others—for their knowledge, professionalism, and genuine care. Whether it's someone helping a 75-year-old hiker manage the heat, bringing hot coffee to guests on a chilly glacier, or extending a tour when timing didn't match expectations, the personal attention stands out. The operation offers everything from Kennecott Mill tours to multi-day wilderness adventures, glacier hikes, ice cave explorations, and rafting trips. The experiences range from accessible half-day outings to seriously challenging multi-day treks that reviewers describe as "not for the faint of heart." Guests appreciate that guides adapt to their group's needs and abilities while keeping safety front and center. The mill tours get special mention for being both informative and entertaining, with access to restricted areas you can't see on your own. People leave with what one reviewer perfectly called "core memories"—the kind of Alaskan adventure that feels both thrilling and remarkably well-supported.
We took a private ice cave tour with St. Elias Alpine Guides, the guide was professional. The ice cave was gorgeous. Please choose them if you want to get some adventure there!
