80-90 minutes
Boat tour, Lobstering demonstration
Join a hands-on lobstering excursion on Casco Bay. Help haul traps or relax as you cruise past lighthouses, historic forts, and Seal Rocks.
Excursions operate rain or shine and boats are mostly exposed. It can be 10–15 degrees cooler on the water; bring layers. Arrive 20 minutes early to check in; onboard bathrooms are limited.
What should I wear?
Do not wear clothes you are afraid to get dirty. It can be 10–15 degrees cooler on the water; bring layers and consider a hat. Any footwear is okay; in May and October you may need a warm jacket, hat, and gloves.
What if it’s raining?
Tours operate rain or shine. Boats have some cover but are mostly exposed, with limited seating under the wheelhouse. Aprons, pants, and gloves are provided, but bringing your own foul-weather gear is advised.
What if there’s a thunderstorm?
If thunderstorms become a safety concern, the excursion will be canceled or return to the dock. If canceled or if you return without pulling traps, you will receive a full refund.
Can I buy lobsters after the cruise?
Yes. After the work is complete you may choose lobsters from the onboard live tank. You can take them to go or have them cooked next door at Portland Lobster Company.
Can I buy the same lobster we catch?
Not necessarily. Catch varies and there is no guarantee there will be enough for every passenger on every trip.
Is the Lucky Catch tour different than the St. Croix?
Yes. Lucky Catch has a commercial lobster license so legal lobsters can be kept. St. Croix has a demonstration license and must throw back all lobsters but has additional lobsters available for purchase; it hauls three traps and visits the same sights.
Is there a bathroom on the boat?
The Gray Lucky Catch (14-passenger) has no bathroom. The Red Lucky Catch (20-passenger) and the St. Croix have a low-capacity bathroom for emergency use only. The excursion is 80–90 minutes; use a restroom in advance.
Is it customary to tip the crew?
Yes, passengers often tip if they’ve had a pleasurable experience. Gratuities are split evenly among the crew and are never expected but always appreciated.
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund. No-shows or cancellations within 24 hours are nonrefundable.
170 Commercial St. Portland, Maine
Lucky Catch delivers one of Portland's most authentic and engaging maritime experiences, with visitors consistently praising the crew's infectious enthusiasm and deep knowledge of lobstering. The hands-on nature sets this apart: guests fill bait bags, haul traps, band lobsters, and learn fascinating details about the industry from captains and crew who clearly love what they do. Several reviews mention crew members' teaching backgrounds, which shows in how well they engage everyone from young children to grandparents. Even rainy weather doesn't dampen the experience, with multiple guests noting that getting soaked somehow made the adventure feel more genuine. What makes this especially memorable is the chance to purchase lobsters caught during the cruise for around $10, then walk them next door to Portland Lobster Company for cooking. The educational component runs deeper than expected, covering everything from lobster life cycles to Portland's maritime history, with fun bonuses like feeding the resident seagull. The crew's commitment to customer service shines through, with one captain personally calling guests to resolve a booking mix-up. It's an interactive, informative outing that consistently ranks as the highlight of people's Maine trips.
An awesome experience and a hands on way to learn about the lobstering industry. The crew was friendly and knowledgeable. You’ll get to fill bait bags, pull and set lobster traps, and see many historical sites along the way. At the end of the voyage you can pick your own lobster from the boat for $10/lobster and take it to the Portland Lobster Company next door where they will cook it for $12.95.
