Admission, pre-show entertainment, amenities
Discover the moving story of the Cherokee at the historic Mountainside Theatre. Enjoy a memorable evening of live performance under the stars.
What should I bring?
Some mountain nights are cool, you may want to bring a light jacket, rain coat or poncho just in case. Pets and outside food and drink are not allowed except for medical reasons. Dogs must be certified service animals. Bring your tickets or pick them up at the Will Call window by the theater's entrance, available from 4PM.
Why go on if it is raining?
The show aims to perform despite weather, as sharing the Cherokee story is central to the organization. If a performance is cancelled, rain checks are provided.
Is the venue accessible?
Mountainside Theatre has stairs; free golf cart assistance is available from the top of the theatre to row S and back.
The performance contains flashing lights and loud noises, including gunshots and cannon fire. Those with mobility issues may find it difficult to get to the front rows. Group rates are available for groups of 15 or more. Pre-show dinner is available for purchase and must be booked 24 hours in advance.
If a performance is cancelled, your ticket will be converted to a rain check valid through the end of the 2025 season. All sales are final. Ticket exchanges are available for a future performance in the same season up to 24 hours before the scheduled performance. Performance insurance is available for an additional fee and entitles you to a refund if a performance is cancelled prior to intermission. After a cancelled performance, you have 5 days to request a refund; after that, your ticket converts to a rain check.
Mountainside Theatre, 688 Drama Rd, Cherokee, NC
The "Unto These Hills" outdoor drama draws overwhelmingly positive reactions from visitors who appreciate its educational value and emotional impact. Many reviewers, including those with Cherokee heritage, emphasize how much they learned about Cherokee history and the Trail of Tears. The cast consistently earns praise for their talent and authenticity, and staff members are frequently described as knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful throughout the village and theater experience. The outdoor theater setting creates a beautiful atmosphere, though it comes with practical considerations. The venue features stadium-style seating with lots of stairs, which several older visitors found challenging. General admission seating seems perfectly adequate according to multiple reviewers, and the theater is large enough that most seats offer good views. Bring cushions for comfort, and definitely pack rain gear since performances can be weather-dependent. Despite occasional weather interruptions that come with outdoor venues, the show itself remains a powerful, educational experience that many families return to year after year.
I'm SO GLAD that we were able to attend the play this year. The storyline, the acting, the staging, the amphitheatre were all FABULOUS! I definitely recommend that you attend the play. I suggest you get the general admission seats. We did, and we had better seats than most of the reserved seats. We look forward to coming back next season.
