The Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge in Nevada is a landmark arch span offering breathtaking views of Hoover Dam, the Colorado River, and Black Canyon.
The Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge opened in 2010 as the centerpiece of a project to reroute US Route 93 away from the narrow roadway that once ran directly across the top of Hoover Dam. The bridge is named in honor of Mike O'Callaghan, a former Nevada governor, and Pat Tillman, the NFL player and Army Ranger who was killed in Afghanistan in 2004. The dual dedication reflects both Nevada's civic heritage and a broader national story of service and sacrifice.
At the time of its completion, the bridge contained the longest concrete arch in the Western Hemisphere, spanning roughly 1,900 feet from rim to rim and rising about 900 feet above the Colorado River. Walking the pedestrian path, you pass interpretive panels that explain the engineering methods used to construct the arch from both canyon walls simultaneously, working toward the center without any support from below.
The views from the walkway are among the most striking of any publicly accessible bridge in the country. Looking upstream, Hoover Dam fills the frame completely, its curved concrete face holding back the deep blue waters of Lake Mead. Looking downstream, Black Canyon narrows into shadow and the river resumes its natural course toward the Mojave Desert.
Boulder City serves as the practical gateway, offering places to eat and rest before or after a visit. The surrounding Lake Mead National Recreation Area provides additional context for the landscape, and the combination of dam, bridge, and canyon makes this corner of southern Nevada genuinely worth the detour.
Visit in the early morning to catch softer light on the canyon walls and avoid the midday heat, which can be intense even in spring and fall.
Walk the dedicated pedestrian path on the downstream side of the bridge for the clearest, unobstructed views directly down to Hoover Dam.
Bring a wide-angle lens or use your phone's panorama mode, as the full sweep of the canyon and dam cannot fit in a standard frame.
Combine your visit with a tour of Hoover Dam itself, located just a short drive away, to understand the full scope of the construction project the bridge completes.
Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, as the walkway surface and surrounding trailheads can be uneven and exposed to wind coming up through the canyon.
