Otter Cliff is a towering granite headland on the Maine coast, celebrated for its sheer sea cliffs, crashing Atlantic surf, and sweeping ocean views.
Otter Cliff has long been one of Acadia National Park's most iconic landmarks. The cliff face, composed of the same pink Cadillac Mountain granite that defines much of Mount Desert Island, was shaped by glaciers and relentless ocean erosion over thousands of years. Early landscape painters of the Hudson River School traveled here in the nineteenth century, drawn by its raw coastal drama.
Today visitors come to walk the Ocean Path, a level gravel trail that runs along the shoreline and delivers unobstructed views of the cliff from below. Rock climbers are drawn to the vertical granite faces, which offer some of the only sea-cliff climbing on the East Coast. The routes here are well-regarded among experienced climbers for their quality and setting.
The surrounding waters attract harbor porpoises and seabirds year-round, while autumn brings migrating raptors riding thermals above the headland. The cliff is equally compelling in winter, when storm surf sends spray high against the rock and the coastline feels truly wild.
Few places on the Atlantic seaboard combine geological grandeur, natural history, and sheer scenic power the way Otter Cliff does, making it a destination that stays with visitors long after they leave.
Visit at sunrise for soft golden light on the granite and far fewer crowds than midday brings.
Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good grip, as the rock surfaces near the cliff edge can be slippery when wet.
Walk the Ocean Path south from Sand Beach to reach Otter Cliff on foot and enjoy the full coastal scenery along the way.
Bring binoculars to spot seabirds, harbor seals, and the occasional whale offshore during warmer months.
Check the tide schedule before you go, as low tide exposes tide pools at the base of the cliff worth exploring from shore.
