Thunder Hole is a dramatic coastal inlet in Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, Maine, known for its thunderous waves, sea spray, and rugged Atlantic scenery.
Thunder Hole sits along the Ocean Path on the eastern shore of Mount Desert Island, carved into the pink Cadillac granite that defines so much of Acadia National Park's coastline. The inlet itself is a narrow slot in the rock, roughly ten feet wide, formed over thousands of years as waves exploited a natural weakness in the stone and slowly wore it away. When conditions align, an incoming wave traps a pocket of air at the back of the slot, and the compressed air escapes with a sound that genuinely resembles a clap of thunder, giving the site its name. The intensity of the display depends entirely on swell height and tidal stage, which is why seasoned visitors always check the tide schedule before the trip.
Surrounding the inlet, the shoreline is a mosaic of barnacle-crusted ledges, tide pools filled with periwinkles and sea urchins, and wave-polished rock faces that catch the morning light beautifully. The Ocean Path connects Thunder Hole to Sand Beach to the north and Otter Cliff to the south, making it a natural anchor for a longer coastal walk.
Bar Harbor, just a few miles away, offers fresh lobster rolls, chowder, and blueberry pie at numerous restaurants along Cottage Street and Main Street. Thunder Hole requires no admission beyond the standard Acadia park pass, and the paved path makes it accessible to most visitors. The combination of geological drama, coastal wildlife, and easy access makes Thunder Hole one of the most memorable stops on the entire Maine coast.
Visit two hours before high tide for the most dramatic booms and the tallest spray, as this timing creates ideal wave compression in the chasm.
Bring a waterproof jacket or rain shell even on sunny days, since the spray at Thunder Hole soaks unprepared visitors standing near the railing.
Walk the Ocean Path south from Thunder Hole toward Otter Cliff for sweeping views of pink granite headlands and open Atlantic water.
Arrive early in the morning to beat the midday crowds that gather along the Park Loop Road during peak summer season.
Check the tide charts posted at the Acadia National Park visitor center or available on the park website before making the drive out to Thunder Hole.
