Taste Beijing breakfast traditions on a hutong walking tour
3 Hours
Food tastings, drinks, market visit
Start your morning with Beijing breakfast favorites and stories from the city’s historic hutongs. Taste local dishes while learning how food, markets, and neighborhood life connect.
Explore a Local Market Step into this factory-turned-market brimming with fresh veggies, spices, and neatly sliced meat. We’ll make a stop at Aunt Jie’s stall for some zongzi: glutinous rice dumplings stuffed with seasoned pork and wrapped in bamboo leaves – handmade from her family’s generations-old recipe.
Brace Yourself for Douzhi This tangy, fermented mung bean soup might just top your personal “weirdest foods” list (love it or hate it, you won’t forget it!). This popular spot has earned a Michelin nod and is the place to get a true taste of Beijing’s boldest tradition.
Discover Beijing Comfort Food Meet Mr. Yu who serves up childhood memories in the form of crispy sesame flatbread stuffed with beef, alongside a warming bowl of tofu pudding – proof that good taste never goes out of style.
Learn Hidden Hutong Secrets Wander historic lanes and discover the secrets hidden in doorway pillars made of stone, the meaning of color-coded street signs, and how to tell how many families live inside each courtyard (plus so much more)!
Try Jianbing with a Twist Tucked into a literal hole-in-the-wall, this shop crafts one of the city’s favorite jianbing (think “Chinese burrito”), staying true to its roots with a classic mung bean batter while adding a cheesy twist – perfectly blending tradition with innovation.
Beijing's Imperial Treats From Pea Jelly & Donkey Rolls, once relished by emperors, to tangy Hawthorn Cake, this 80 year old shop celebrates Old-Beijing’s sweet traditions.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before start. No refunds within 24 hours of start. Rescheduling within 24 hours incurs an additional 50% charge.
Requests must be noted at booking. Vegetarian options are available, but not all dishes have direct substitutes and kitchens use meat. Vegan and gluten-free diets cannot be accommodated. Severe allergies cannot be accommodated and cross-contamination is possible.
More than a full meal’s worth across multiple stops, including drinks. Pace yourself between tastings.

Portland food tours done right. Guides like Herb, Michelle, and Evangel consistently earn high praise for their genuine enthusiasm, deep local knowledge, and ability to make every guest feel at ease. From Portland's quirky food cart pods to the city's thriving coffee and donut scene, each tour weaves together great food with real stories about the people and neighborhoods behind it. What stands out most across reviews is how often guests mention trying things they never would have ordered on their own, and loving them. Dietary accommodations are handled smoothly, group sizes stay small and social, and the pacing feels relaxed rather than rushed. Locals and visitors alike come away with a fresh perspective on the city. If you're trying to decide between tours, the food cart experience and the coffee and donut tour both draw glowing feedback, each offering something distinct. The guides clearly take pride in what they do, and that energy tends to be contagious. Come hungry and ready to explore.
Wow so much great food and Herb did a great job guiding us around the food cart pods! Our group of 3 so enjoyed everything- from the thai iced tea on the unusually warm day (from Portland) to the el pastor tacos to the chicken swarma and bavarian queen strawberry & cream waffle! Yum! this is the food cart tour to take in Portland for delicious food (with enough to take home for another meal or two!) Next I need to try the coffee and donut tour !
