Corner of Bull Street and Broughton Street, Savannah Historic District (GPS reference: near 1 E. Broughton St.)
The Savannah Historic District sets the stage for one of the most atmospheric evening experiences in the South, a Colonial-era ghost walking tour through streets that have witnessed more than three centuries of history. Laid out by General James Oglethorpe in 1733, the Savannah Historic District is famous for its leafy squares, gas-lit lanes, and centuries-old townhouses that lean into one another beneath canopies of Spanish moss. After dark, the district takes on a different character, the kind of hush that invites stories of the people who once lived, loved, and died within these very blocks.
Your guide leads you on foot through the heart of the Savannah Historic District, pausing in shadowy squares and beside weathered brick facades to share tales from the colonial era, yellow fever epidemics, duels, and the restless spirits said to linger in old taverns and family homes. You will hear about the bodies buried beneath the cobblestones, the haunted inns that still welcome guests, and the unsettling encounters reported by residents to this day. The sensory layer is part of the magic, the scent of jasmine and river air, the distant clip of a horse-drawn carriage, the soft glow of historic streetlamps catching wrought-iron balconies as you move from one storied site to the next.
This walking tour is perfect for history lovers, paranormal enthusiasts, couples looking for a memorable date night, and travelers who want to understand the darker undercurrents of one of America's oldest cities. Families with older children who enjoy spooky stories will also find plenty to talk about long after the tour ends. Whether you are a first-time visitor or returning to explore deeper, the Savannah Historic District after sunset offers a side of the city that daylight cannot reveal, and this colonial ghost walk is the ideal way to step into it.
This ghost tour operation in Savannah has clearly figured out that great guides make all the difference. The standout names that keep popping up are Otto the Odd, Captain Jack, Madam Raven (also called Lady Ravenwood), Dawn, and Steven. What's impressive is how each guide brings their own flavor while maintaining deep knowledge of Savannah's haunted history. Otto commits fully to staying in character throughout the tour, which guests love even if it's occasionally a bit cheesy. Captain Jack gets praised for going the extra mile with practical touches like bringing water and umbrellas. These aren't just people reciting facts; they're storytellers who make a couple of hours fly by while keeping groups engaged and entertained. The walking tours cover both the dark and light sides of Savannah's past, with stops at various haunted locations that get thorough explanations rather than rushed drive-bys. Several reviewers specifically note that walking beats trolley or carriage tours for this deeper dive into the city's spooky side. Practical tips from guests include wearing comfortable shoes, bringing bug spray (though guides do warn you ahead of time), and booking evening tours for better atmosphere and cooler temperatures. The cemetery tour at Bonaventure also gets high marks for being intimate and unhurried. A couple minor notes: one person had to duck out for a bathroom break, and there's the typical Savannah heat to contend with during day tours, though guides do their best to keep everyone in the shade.
captain jack was the best guide ever!! a walking tour is so much cooler than a bus/car tour because you really get to experience savannah. doing it at night definitely set the atmosphere and my friends were pretty scared (even though i wasn't) captain jack was very cognizant of our surroundings as well and mindful of the entire group. plus he had the most rad outfit on ever. GET THIS MAN A RAISE!!
