Life jackets are required. Tours may be rescheduled or canceled for extreme weather, and no alcohol or drugs are permitted. A minimum of two participants applies; dogs are allowed on private tours and on shared tours only if all guests agree.
Cancel at least 24 hours before your tour for a full refund. No refunds are available within 24 hours of the start time.
No. We use an uncovered outboard motorboat with a quiet four-stroke engine for a more relaxed, less intrusive experience.
Sightings are not guaranteed since we do not feed alligators. Any alligators seen are wild and typically timid.
Often birds and alligators; sometimes otters, beavers, snakes, turtles, raccoons, coyotes, and deer.

This family-run operation offers an authentic alternative to the typical airboat swamp tours, taking visitors deep into the Atchafalaya Basin for genuinely educational experiences. Guides Al and Dean consistently earn praise for their extensive ecological knowledge and passion for conservation. Reviewers appreciate that they let groups soak in the quiet beauty of the swamp rather than constantly narrating, and they're committed to protecting the environment (no feeding wildlife for photo ops). The wildlife sightings are impressive—alligators, cypress trees up to 2000 years old, countless bird species, turtles, and more—though what you'll see varies by season and water levels. Both boat and kayak tours get rave reviews, with many visitors doing both to get different perspectives on the ecosystem. The small group sizes create intimate, peaceful experiences, and tours run even with minimal bookings. Several guests also mention the cabin rental as a quiet, comfortable basecamp. Solo travelers and families alike felt welcomed and thoroughly engaged throughout their visits.
Wonderful way to spend a morning. My friend and I are playing tourist in our home state and going around Louisiana doing things we know are unique to this beautiful state…and Last Wilderness was exactly what we were hoping for. We loved seeing all the trees Captain Dean took us to, enjoyed naming birds with our fellow tour friends and seeing some alligators. It was easy to find, easy to ride along in the boat and easy to listen to Captain Dean’s passion about preserving our beautiful swamps. Highly recommend if you are looking for a short tour around the Atchafalaya basin. Next time we are going to do the kayak tour. Bring: sunscreen (non spray to protect the swamp) a sun hat, bug spray and some water. Pro tip: drive up to plaquemine for poboys at Fat Daddy!
