Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park in southern Utah is a rare landscape of wind-sculpted rose-hued dunes, open OHV terrain, and striking views of the surrounding canyon country.
Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park owes its vivid coloring to the erosion of ancient Navajo sandstone formations that once dominated this region of the Colorado Plateau. Wind funneling through a notch in the surrounding cliffs slows just enough to drop its load of fine sand grains, building dunes that now cover several thousand acres of what would otherwise be classic Utah high desert. The park has been a Utah state park since the 1960s and draws visitors with a genuinely unusual combination of soft, walkable dunes and designated off-highway vehicle areas, making it one of the few places in the state where families with different interests can find something compelling within the same boundaries.
Hikers and casual visitors tend to gather at the main dune access area, where a short walk leads you into the heart of the formation and broad views open up toward the Moquith Mountains and the pale cliffs of the surrounding plateau. The dunes themselves shift slowly over time, shaped by prevailing winds, and the surface texture changes noticeably from morning to afternoon as foot traffic and breeze rework the upper layer.
Wildlife is more present than the stark setting might suggest, with mule deer, coyotes, and various lizard species making use of the scrubby vegetation at the dune margins. The town of Kanab, roughly ten miles to the south, provides a full range of lodging and dining rooted in its history as a gateway to Grand Staircase-Escalante and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park rewards visitors who take their time, sitting still long enough to watch the color of the sand change as clouds pass overhead and the light shifts across the plateau.
Visit during the golden hour just after sunrise or before sunset, when the low light deepens the coral tones and shadows define every ripple across the dunes.
Bring a sandboard or rent one nearby if you want to make the most of the steeper dune faces, which offer a surprisingly fast ride down.
Wear closed-toe shoes for any extended walk, since the sand can become very hot by midday in summer months.
Keep an eye out for the Coral Pink Sand Dunes tiger beetle, a species found nowhere else on Earth and sometimes spotted along the dune margins.
Arrive on a weekday if possible, as weekends draw larger OHV crowds and the quieter weekday atmosphere makes the landscape feel more expansive.
