Things to do nearRocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado offers towering peaks, abundant wildlife, and more than 350 miles of trails through some of the most dramatic alpine scenery in North America.

Rocky Mountain National Park was established in 1915, shaped in large part by the advocacy of naturalist Enos Mills, who spent decades exploring and writing about the Front Range wilderness he called home. The park encompasses roughly 415 square miles of terrain that spans montane forests of ponderosa pine and aspen, subalpine zones dense with Engelmann spruce, and open tundra above 11,000 feet where the growing season lasts only a matter of weeks. Trail Ridge Road bisects this vertical landscape, climbing to over 12,000 feet and offering visitors a rare chance to experience true alpine tundra without leaving their vehicle, though the pullouts invite longer exploration on foot.

The park's trail network reaches glacially carved lakes like Sky Pond and Chasm Lake, the latter sitting directly beneath the sheer east face of Longs Peak, which at 14,259 feet is the park's highest summit and a serious mountaineering objective.

Wildlife is a consistent draw throughout the year: moose wade through beaver ponds in Kawuneeche Valley on the park's quieter western side, black bears move through the forests in late summer, and mule deer are a near-constant presence along roadsides. The gateway towns of Estes Park and Grand Lake provide lodging, dining, and outfitter services, with Estes Park offering the widest range of options just outside the park's eastern entrances. Rocky Mountain National Park earns its place among the country's most visited protected landscapes not through spectacle alone but through the genuine wildness that persists within its boundaries.

Tips for visiting Rocky Mountain National Park

    1

Visit during September and October to witness the elk rut, when bulls bugle across the valleys in one of North America's most dramatic wildlife displays.

    2

Arrive at the most popular trailheads, including Bear Lake and Sky Pond, before 7 a.m. to secure parking and beat the midday crowds.

    3

Bring layers regardless of the season, as temperatures above treeline can drop sharply within minutes even on a clear summer afternoon.

    4

Drive Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved highway in the United States, for sweeping tundra views and frequent bighorn sheep sightings near the Alpine Visitor Center.

    5

Try the short hike to Emerald Lake for a concentrated sample of the park's scenery, passing Nymph Lake and Dream Lake along the way.
