Tuolumne Meadows is Yosemite National Park's high-country heart in California, drawing visitors with sweeping granite domes, a winding river, and some of the Sierra Nevada's finest hiking.
Tuolumne Meadows sits along Tioga Road in the high country of Yosemite National Park, at an elevation that puts it well above the crowded valley and closer to the raw character of the Sierra Nevada. The meadows were shaped by glacial activity over thousands of years, and the smooth, rounded granite formations that rise from the grass, including Lembert Dome and Pothole Dome, are direct evidence of that geological past. John Muir wrote admiringly of this landscape in the late nineteenth century, helping to build public appreciation for the Sierra Nevada that eventually contributed to Yosemite's protected status.
Today the area serves as a trailhead hub for some of the most celebrated backcountry routes in California, including the John Muir Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail, both of which pass through the meadows. Day hikers find plenty of options at every level of difficulty, from the gentle stroll around Soda Springs and its natural carbonated spring to the more demanding ascent of Mount Dana. The Tuolumne River runs through the center of the meadows, offering good spots to rest, watch for wildlife, or simply take in the scale of the landscape.
A small seasonal store and grill near the campground provides basic supplies and a modest menu for those who need to refuel. The atmosphere throughout is one of unhurried exploration, where the distance from the valley floor creates a feeling of genuine remoteness even on busy summer days. Tuolumne Meadows offers a version of Yosemite that rewards the effort of getting there with scenery and solitude that the more accessible parts of the park simply cannot match.
Visit between late July and early September, when Tioga Road is reliably open and the meadows are at their most lush and accessible.
Try the sunrise hike to Lembert Dome for panoramic views of the meadows and surrounding peaks with far fewer crowds than midday brings.
Bring layers regardless of the forecast, as afternoon thunderstorms are common at elevation and temperatures can drop sharply after sunset.
Stop at the Tuolumne Meadows Visitor Center to pick up a wilderness permit and speak with rangers about current trail and wildlife conditions.
Look for the short, easy walk along the Dana Fork of the Tuolumne River near the campground, a quieter stretch that rewards patient visitors with wildflower sightings and occasional deer.
