Andrew Molera State Park sits at the heart of Big Sur's wild coastline, a sprawling preserve where the Big Sur River meets the Pacific and the legendary Old Coast Road begins its winding climb into the Santa Lucia Mountains. On this guided electric bike tour, Andrew Molera State Park serves as a key landmark along the historic Old Coast Road route, giving riders a front-row view of the meadows, redwood-shaded canyons, and ocean bluffs that make this stretch of California so beloved. The park's untamed character, with its driftwood beaches, grassy headlands, and resident wildlife, sets the tone for the entire ride.
As you pedal through the Old Coast Road corridor near Andrew Molera State Park, the electric assist makes the rolling terrain feel effortless, letting you focus on the scenery rather than the climb. Expect the salt-tinged breeze rolling in off the Pacific, the scent of bay laurel and coastal sage, and sweeping panoramas across the Big Sur Valley. The guide shares stories of the early ranchers and stagecoach travelers who once relied on this dirt road before Highway 1 existed, and Andrew Molera State Park anchors much of that history with its old Cooper Cabin and ranching heritage. Compared to the more crowded pullouts along the main highway, this route offers a quieter, more intimate look at Big Sur's backcountry.
This experience is ideal for curious travelers who want to go beyond the typical Big Sur photo stops, including couples seeking a memorable half-day adventure, active families with older kids, and nature lovers who appreciate guided context. Riders of varying fitness levels can enjoy the journey thanks to the pedal-assist bikes, and the proximity to Andrew Molera State Park means you are immersed in protected wilderness from the moment you set off. If you want to feel the real, rugged spirit of the central California coast, exploring the Old Coast Road alongside Andrew Molera State Park is an unforgettable way to do it.
This dual bike shop and coffee bar draws rave reviews for its friendly, knowledgeable staff who excel at setting up visitors with e-bikes and adorable dog sidecars. The staff genuinely seems to enjoy their work, offering thoughtful touches like pup cups and making sure nervous dogs feel secure before heading out. Tour guides like Leslie and Kathy get particular praise for their warmth and expertise, with Kathy even surprising one birthday guest with a cookie and candle. The bikes themselves are easy to handle, and the recommended 17-Mile Drive route delivers stunning coastal scenery that riders say beats experiencing it by car. The coffee side holds its own with creative homemade syrups (the vanilla cardamom and velvet noir lattes get enthusiastic mentions) and perfectly pulled espresso shots. The aesthetic space feels like a genuine gem rather than a tourist trap. One detailed review raised concerns about unclear tour structures, pushy insurance add-ons, and an awkward tipping moment that left a sour note, though this seems to be an outlier among otherwise glowing experiences. Whether renting bikes independently or joining a guided tour, most visitors call it a highlight of their Carmel visit and appreciate the full-day rental option to avoid feeling rushed.
i cannot say enough good things about Mad Dogs & Englishmen! i lived in monterey for almost 10 years and had no clue what a gem this place was till i moved away. i tried their coffee which was absolutely fantastic — the cold foam was the cherry on top! i then came back to try the ceremonial iced matcha which was the perfect matcha to milk ratio (IYKYK). i also tried the ham and cheese croissant — which my stomach ate first. SO YUMMY & cheesy. the staff are all incredibly friendly. their shop inside is so cute; from apparel, to beans, stickers, and more! parking is limited to street parking, which can get crazy during peak tourist season, but absolutely worth the walk! i will always go out of my way now to get a coffee or matcha here — 10/10!
