This dual bike shop and coffee bar draws rave reviews for its friendly, knowledgeable staff who excel at setting up visitors with e-bikes and adorable dog sidecars. The staff genuinely seems to enjoy their work, offering thoughtful touches like pup cups and making sure nervous dogs feel secure before heading out. Tour guides like Leslie and Kathy get particular praise for their warmth and expertise, with Kathy even surprising one birthday guest with a cookie and candle. The bikes themselves are easy to handle, and the recommended 17-Mile Drive route delivers stunning coastal scenery that riders say beats experiencing it by car. The coffee side holds its own with creative homemade syrups (the vanilla cardamom and velvet noir lattes get enthusiastic mentions) and perfectly pulled espresso shots. The aesthetic space feels like a genuine gem rather than a tourist trap. One detailed review raised concerns about unclear tour structures, pushy insurance add-ons, and an awkward tipping moment that left a sour note, though this seems to be an outlier among otherwise glowing experiences. Whether renting bikes independently or joining a guided tour, most visitors call it a highlight of their Carmel visit and appreciate the full-day rental option to avoid feeling rushed.
i cannot say enough good things about Mad Dogs & Englishmen! i lived in monterey for almost 10 years and had no clue what a gem this place was till i moved away. i tried their coffee which was absolutely fantastic — the cold foam was the cherry on top! i then came back to try the ceremonial iced matcha which was the perfect matcha to milk ratio (IYKYK). i also tried the ham and cheese croissant — which my stomach ate first. SO YUMMY & cheesy. the staff are all incredibly friendly. their shop inside is so cute; from apparel, to beans, stickers, and more! parking is limited to street parking, which can get crazy during peak tourist season, but absolutely worth the walk! i will always go out of my way now to get a coffee or matcha here — 10/10!
