Carmel River State Beach sits where the Carmel River meets the Pacific, a quiet crescent of sand tucked just south of Carmel-by-the-Sea's storybook village. On this guided electric bike tour, Carmel River State Beach becomes one of the most memorable stops along the route, a place where the pace slows, the views open up, and the salty Monterey Bay air rolls in off the surf. Pelicans glide low over the lagoon, harbor seals occasionally bob in the shallows, and the rugged headlands of Point Lobos rise in the distance, giving riders a true taste of the wild Central California coastline that has inspired artists and writers for generations.
Gliding into Carmel River State Beach by electric bike means you arrive without the strain of pedaling up the rolling coastal hills, leaving you free to soak in the scenery. Your guide shares the natural and cultural history of the area, from the freshwater lagoon and its migrating birdlife to the long stretch of pale sand framed by cypress and pine. After the cobblestone streets, fairytale cottages, and white-sand beach of central Carmel-by-the-Sea, Carmel River State Beach offers a quieter, more elemental contrast: open sky, the rhythm of the waves, and a sense of the coast as it has looked for centuries. It is the kind of stop that turns a sightseeing tour into a real connection with the landscape.
This part of the ride is ideal for couples seeking a romantic coastal moment, photographers chasing soft Pacific light, and curious travelers who want more than the typical village stroll. Families enjoy it too, since the electric bikes make the terrain accessible for a wide range of riders. Whether you pause for photos, listen for the seals, or simply breathe in the ocean air, Carmel River State Beach adds a quietly spectacular highlight to your Carmel-by-the-Sea adventure and a memory worth taking home.
This dual bike shop and coffee bar draws rave reviews for its friendly, knowledgeable staff who excel at setting up visitors with e-bikes and adorable dog sidecars. The staff genuinely seems to enjoy their work, offering thoughtful touches like pup cups and making sure nervous dogs feel secure before heading out. Tour guides like Leslie and Kathy get particular praise for their warmth and expertise, with Kathy even surprising one birthday guest with a cookie and candle. The bikes themselves are easy to handle, and the recommended 17-Mile Drive route delivers stunning coastal scenery that riders say beats experiencing it by car. The coffee side holds its own with creative homemade syrups (the vanilla cardamom and velvet noir lattes get enthusiastic mentions) and perfectly pulled espresso shots. The aesthetic space feels like a genuine gem rather than a tourist trap. One detailed review raised concerns about unclear tour structures, pushy insurance add-ons, and an awkward tipping moment that left a sour note, though this seems to be an outlier among otherwise glowing experiences. Whether renting bikes independently or joining a guided tour, most visitors call it a highlight of their Carmel visit and appreciate the full-day rental option to avoid feeling rushed.
i cannot say enough good things about Mad Dogs & Englishmen! i lived in monterey for almost 10 years and had no clue what a gem this place was till i moved away. i tried their coffee which was absolutely fantastic — the cold foam was the cherry on top! i then came back to try the ceremonial iced matcha which was the perfect matcha to milk ratio (IYKYK). i also tried the ham and cheese croissant — which my stomach ate first. SO YUMMY & cheesy. the staff are all incredibly friendly. their shop inside is so cute; from apparel, to beans, stickers, and more! parking is limited to street parking, which can get crazy during peak tourist season, but absolutely worth the walk! i will always go out of my way now to get a coffee or matcha here — 10/10!
