Explore Chongqing's neighborhood food culture after dark
3.5 Hours
Food, drinks, dessert & city views
Explore the everyday flavors and food traditions of Chongqing after dark. Discover how river-port history and steep terrain have shaped the city's cuisine.
Kuixing Building & China's "8D City" Stand on what looks like the ground floor…then look over the edge to discover you’re actually 22 stories above another street. It’s one of the best places to understand why Chongqing’s layered cityscape is unlike anywhere else in China.
Pea & Minced Pork Noodles Meet Mr. Gong, who has spent more than a decade perfecting his own version of Chongqing’s favorite comfort food: Chongqing xiaomian. Handmade noodles, slow-cooked yellow peas, minced pork, silky tofu pudding, and chili oil come together in a bowl that perfectly captures Chongqing’s balance of bold flavors and comforting textures.
Eat Chongqing's Everyday Classics Long before Chongqing became famous for hotpot, locals gathered around tables filled with small shared dishes service with rice or tofu. Enjoy favorites like melt-in-your-mouth steamed pork belly, braised beef, and seasonal vegetables.
Walk Through China's Mountain City Wander through the historic neighborhoods around Jiefangbei and Daijia Alley, where old stone staircases and hidden lanes sit beneath Chongqing’s modern skyline. Once a major river port and wartime capital, this area has seen merchants, journalists, laborers, and families pass through for generations.
Authentic Neighborhood Hotpot Born along the Yangtze River over 100 years ago, Chongqing hotpot started as a simple meal for dock-workers and boat crew. Today, it’s a city obsession with more than 30,000 hot pot restaurants. Try the flavors that made it famous: rich beef tallow broth, fiery chilies, and numbing Sichuan peppercorns at a local neighborhood restaurant.
Hongya Cave by Night Take in the glowing view of Hongyadong, where traditional architecture meets Chongqing’s modern skyline. This is one of the most famous night-views in the city!
A Sweet Chongqing Treat After an evening of bold flavors, end on a sweet note with a traditional handmade dessert, just steps from Hongya Cave and overlooking Chongqing’s iconic Qiansimen Bridge.

Portland food tours done right. Guides like Herb, Michelle, and Evangel consistently earn high praise for their genuine enthusiasm, deep local knowledge, and ability to make every guest feel at ease. From Portland's quirky food cart pods to the city's thriving coffee and donut scene, each tour weaves together great food with real stories about the people and neighborhoods behind it. What stands out most across reviews is how often guests mention trying things they never would have ordered on their own, and loving them. Dietary accommodations are handled smoothly, group sizes stay small and social, and the pacing feels relaxed rather than rushed. Locals and visitors alike come away with a fresh perspective on the city. If you're trying to decide between tours, the food cart experience and the coffee and donut tour both draw glowing feedback, each offering something distinct. The guides clearly take pride in what they do, and that energy tends to be contagious. Come hungry and ready to explore.
Wow so much great food and Herb did a great job guiding us around the food cart pods! Our group of 3 so enjoyed everything- from the thai iced tea on the unusually warm day (from Portland) to the el pastor tacos to the chicken swarma and bavarian queen strawberry & cream waffle! Yum! this is the food cart tour to take in Portland for delicious food (with enough to take home for another meal or two!) Next I need to try the coffee and donut tour !
