See the Tillamook Coast in fall on a round-trip vintage train ride from Rockaway Beach to Wheeler, with coastal forest and bay views along the way. Enjoy on-board narration and time to explore Wheeler during your layover.
The train is not wheelchair accessible at Rockaway Beach and Wheeler stations, and you must be able to climb steps. There are no restrooms on board; use facilities before boarding or during the Wheeler layover. Dogs and small pets are allowed only in outdoor cars; only task-trained service animals are allowed in indoor cars.
Tickets once purchased, are non-refundable. They may, however, be exchanged for another date for the same excursion type within the same calendar year.
When should I arrive, and when does boarding start?
Please arrive at least 30 minutes before departure. Boarding begins at least 15 minutes prior to departure, and the train departs at the beginning of the listed time range.
How does check-in work and where do I line up?
Check-in takes place on board the train. Line up at the boarding gate with the sign labeled “Outbound Reservations,” and have your confirmation available or provide the first and last name on the reservation. Staff will direct you to your assigned car.
Can I switch seats or cars during the trip?
Seat switching may not be available due to limited seating. Please sit only in the car you’re assigned to.
What happens during the Wheeler layover, and how do I make sure I don’t get left behind?
The layover in Wheeler is approximately 35–40 minutes and may be shortened due to extenuating circumstances. On-board staff will announce the exact return departure time before arriving, and a 5-minute final warning whistle will be given; passengers are responsible for returning to the train on time.
What should I wear for the weather, especially if I booked an outdoor car?
Weather on the Oregon Coast can change quickly, so dress in layers. If the weather turns and you’re booked in an outdoor car, you may not be able to change seats. Climate control in indoor cars is not reliable, so consider bringing jackets and blankets.
Rockaway Beach Station
Most travelers absolutely love this vintage train experience, praising the friendly staff and beautiful coastal scenery you can't quite appreciate while driving. The narration hits the sweet spot of being informative without overdoing it, and guests enjoy choosing between different car types based on their preferences. The relaxed pace lets you soak in panoramic ocean views, though you'll want to pick your seat carefully since the train reverses rather than turning around. A few practical things to know: delays can happen, so build some flexibility into your day. The vintage cars are authentically small and cozy, which some find charming and others find cramped. The route runs alongside the highway rather than through wilderness, and there aren't bathrooms onboard. One reviewer mentioned the ride can be bumpy for those with back issues. Wheeler, the turnaround point, is quite small with limited activities during the wait. Despite these quirks, most guests find it a memorable way to experience the Oregon coast and say they'd happily ride again.
I took my daughter and seven and two-year-old grandchildren on the round trip from Rockaway to Garibaldi. It was so much fun. The narrator told us many interesting facts about the area which made it enjoyable and educational! My recommendation would be to stay a full hour in Garibaldi. We were running back to the train to make it because we only stayed half of an hour.
