Round trip ride, Layover, Gift shop
Take a round-trip scenic train ride from Rockaway Beach to Wheeler and back, with time to explore during a layover. Enjoy springtime views along the Oregon Coast with an onboard narrative as you travel at a relaxed pace.
The train is not wheelchair accessible at the Rockaway Beach station; you must be able to climb steps to board. There are no restrooms on board, so use facilities before departure or during the Wheeler layover. Dogs and small pets are allowed only in outdoor cars; only task-trained service animals are allowed in indoor cars.
Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable. You may reschedule to another day/time of the same excursion within the same calendar year.
How early should I arrive, and when does boarding start?
Please arrive at least 30 minutes before departure. Boarding begins at least 15 minutes prior to departure, and the train departs on time.
How does check-in work and where do I line up?
Check-in happens on board. Line up at the boarding gate with the sign labeled “Outbound Reservations,” then show your confirmation or provide the first and last name on the reservation to the ticket agent.
Can I choose a different seat or switch cars during the ride?
Switching seats may not be available due to limited seating. You’ll be directed to your assigned car at check-in, and you should not sit in a different car than the one assigned.
What happens during the Wheeler layover, and what if I’m late getting back to the train?
The layover in Wheeler is approximately 45 minutes, but it may be shortened in extenuating circumstances. Staff will announce the departure time before arrival, a 5-minute final warning whistle will sound, and the train will leave promptly at the time given.
What is the policy if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable. You may be rebooked to another day/time of the same excursion within the same calendar year, or you may be issued a gift card for the amount paid.
Rockaway Beach Station
Most travelers absolutely love this vintage train experience, praising the friendly staff and beautiful coastal scenery you can't quite appreciate while driving. The narration hits the sweet spot of being informative without overdoing it, and guests enjoy choosing between different car types based on their preferences. The relaxed pace lets you soak in panoramic ocean views, though you'll want to pick your seat carefully since the train reverses rather than turning around. A few practical things to know: delays can happen, so build some flexibility into your day. The vintage cars are authentically small and cozy, which some find charming and others find cramped. The route runs alongside the highway rather than through wilderness, and there aren't bathrooms onboard. One reviewer mentioned the ride can be bumpy for those with back issues. Wheeler, the turnaround point, is quite small with limited activities during the wait. Despite these quirks, most guests find it a memorable way to experience the Oregon coast and say they'd happily ride again.
I took my daughter and seven and two-year-old grandchildren on the round trip from Rockaway to Garibaldi. It was so much fun. The narrator told us many interesting facts about the area which made it enjoyable and educational! My recommendation would be to stay a full hour in Garibaldi. We were running back to the train to make it because we only stayed half of an hour.
