Paddle across Mendenhall Glacier Lake in a guided canoe, then hike the rocky moraine for close-up views from the surrounding bedrock. Travel from downtown Juneau by van and learn about the glacier’s rapid recession as you explore.
Ages 12+ only; max weight 250 lb (115 kg) and minimum shoe size Youth 2. You must know how to swim and sign a liability waiver; pregnant guests are not permitted. A $250 rescue fee per client may be charged if a rescue is needed due to undisclosed medical limits or insufficient fitness.
Cancellations at least 72 hours before the scheduled tour are refunded in full. Cancellations under 72 hours are non-refundable. Full refund if Above & Beyond Alaska cancels a trip due to low enrollment, unsafe weather or route conditions, clients not meeting physical requirements, or other safety issues (if the trip has not started).
Wear polyester or synthetic layers (avoid cotton or denim), plus warm thick socks. Bring sunglasses, and a hat and gloves (both weather dependent). You can also bring personal items like a camera, binoculars, reusable water bottle, food, and extra layers. The tour provides rain gear, but you need your own personal clothing and hiking boots. Plan to bring guide gratuities.
No experience is required, but you must be physically fit and able to paddle 5–6 miles and hike about 2 miles roundtrip on uneven terrain. You must also know how to swim.
No. This tour does not include trekking on the glacier, and there are currently no accessible ice caves at Mendenhall Glacier. You’ll explore the surrounding bedrock near the glacier’s edge (distance varies by season).
