Great Island Common sits along the rocky shoreline of New Castle, just a short ride from Portsmouth, and it makes one of the most rewarding pauses on this private custom bike tour of the New Hampshire Seacoast. The park looks out across the Atlantic toward Whaleback Lighthouse and the open ocean, with lawns sloping down to a pebbled beach and salt air rolling in off the water. Pedaling onto Great Island Common feels like arriving at the quiet heart of the coast, where lobster boats drift past and the only soundtrack is wind in the pines and gulls overhead.
On this tailored ride, your guide shapes the route around your pace and curiosity, and Great Island Common is the kind of stop that invites you to linger. You will roll in past stone walls and weathered cottages, prop your bike against a bench, and take in panoramic views of the harbor islands and the lighthouses guarding the mouth of the Piscataqua. It is a striking contrast to the lively streets of Portsmouth or the wide salt marshes farther down the coast: here the focus narrows to sea, sky, and granite. If the weather cooperates, you can wander down to the shoreline, feel the cool spray, and watch sailboats tack across the bay before climbing back into the saddle.
This stop is perfect for couples looking for a romantic overlook, families wanting a relaxed break with room to roam, and photographers chasing classic New England seacoast scenes. History lovers will appreciate the views toward Fort Constitution and the historic lighthouses, while casual cyclists will simply enjoy the easy approach and the chance to catch their breath in such a beautiful spot. Whatever pace you choose, Great Island Common turns a great bike tour into a memorable one, anchoring the New Hampshire Seacoast in a single, unforgettable view.

The routes take you beyond typical tourist areas to harbor islands and coastal spots you'd likely miss exploring on your own, with New Castle Island being a particular highlight. Both guided tours and independent e-bike rentals are available, and the staff shows real flexibility with timing and routes. The pace is leisurely with plenty of stops, making it accessible even if you're not a regular cyclist. Families with kids and bachelorette parties alike have had great experiences. One reviewer noted some bike maintenance issues, but most found the equipment in excellent condition. The scenic waterfront views combined with insider knowledge about Portsmouth make this an ideal way to get your bearings and discover the area's hidden gems.
Incredible experience renting an E-Bike with PortCity today. They offer tours and independent rentals. I like to do things by myself, so I opted for a solo rental. The shop recommended a fantastic 22 mile loop through the Komoot app. Finished the loop early, and decided to ride into Maine for lunch. They we’re super flexible allowing me to rent the bike for an additional hour. Can’t recommend enough. Will repeat next time I’m in town!
