509 South Ponce De Leon Boulevard, St. Augustine, FL
Fort Matanzas National Monument sits just south of St. Augustine, guarding the Matanzas Inlet where the Atlantic meets the salt marshes of Florida's oldest coastline. Built by the Spanish in 1742 to protect the southern approach to St. Augustine, this small coquina watchtower has stood through hurricanes, sieges, and centuries of shifting tides. While the catamaran sail itself glides through the historic Matanzas Bay closer to the city, the spirit of Fort Matanzas National Monument lives in every wave you cross, since these are the same protected waters Spanish sentries once scanned for approaching ships. The fort remains one of the quietest, most atmospheric corners of the First Coast, a place where Florida's layered past feels remarkably close to the surface.
Setting sail from St. Augustine on the catamaran, you will glide past the Castillo de San Marcos, the Bridge of Lions, and the wide expanse of Matanzas Bay, with the breeze carrying that unmistakable mix of salt air and sun-warmed coquina stone that defines this stretch of coast. Dolphins often rise alongside the hulls, pelicans skim the surface, and the captain shares stories of the Spanish, British, and American eras that shaped these waterways. For travelers planning to extend their day, Fort Matanzas National Monument lies a short drive south along A1A, where a free ferry carries visitors across the inlet to the fort itself, a natural complement to the maritime history you will encounter on the sail.
This experience is ideal for history lovers, couples seeking a romantic sunset on the water, and families who want a relaxed introduction to St. Augustine's seafaring heritage. Photographers will appreciate the golden light over the bay, while anyone curious about Florida's colonial chapters will find the catamaran a perfect companion to a visit at Fort Matanzas National Monument. Together, the sail and the fort tell the full story of how Spain held this coast, making your time on the water feel like more than a cruise, but a quiet passage through the same currents that shaped Fort Matanzas National Monument and the city it once protected.
This family-run operation has guests raving about their self-drive catamaran tours through St. Augustine's waterways. The guides, particularly Jeremy, JT, and Captain Tom, consistently earn praise for being friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic about sharing the area's history and marine life. Multiple reviewers mention this is something they've done multiple times and still want to go back for more, which says a lot about the experience. What makes this stand out is the combination of excitement and intimacy. You're driving your own small boat just inches above the water at speeds around 30 mph, which means you can actually have conversations unlike louder watercraft tours. The close encounters with dolphins, manatees, and sea turtles feel special because of how low you sit on the water. Families spanning from young kids to grandparents all report having a blast, and several people mentioned it topped other adventure activities they've done like ATVing or parasailing. The guides take photos throughout and know exactly where to find wildlife, making it feel like an adventure rather than just a sightseeing tour.
