Ride into Georgia O’Keeffe country at sunset in Ghost Ranch
90 minutes
Guided ride, helmet, day pass
Follow a guided sunset horseback ride into a restricted area of Ghost Ranch and view landscapes tied to Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings. Start with a brief introduction and preview of her work, then ride out to see the locations for yourself.
Minimum age is 8 and maximum weight is 235 lbs. You must be able to walk a mile without breaks; horseback riding is physically demanding and has inherent risks.

Plan to be at the ranch 45 minutes before your ride and check in at the stables/corrals 30 minutes before your scheduled start time. You do not need to check in at the Welcome Center.
The ranch may refuse entry if you have a fever. Masks are required while you are in buildings.
Bring water (a saddlebag is provided). Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes or boots. Also bring sun screen, a cap or hat, and a sun shirt.

Tucked into the red-rock landscape of Ghost Ranch near Abiquiu, New Mexico, the Ruth Hall Museum of Paleontology invites you to stand face to face with creatures that roamed this land more than 200 million years ago. The surrounding cliffs, painted in layers of ochre and rust, feel like a natural extension of the museum's story. Inside, the Ruth Hall Museum of Paleontology centers on Coelophysis bauri, New Mexico's state fossil, unearthed in extraordinary numbers just steps from the building. The displays are modest in scale but rich in context, making the science feel grounded in the actual ground beneath your feet.
This stunning location in Georgia O'Keeffe country consistently wins visitors over with its breathtaking scenery and excellent hiking trails that range from easy to challenging. The Chimney Rock trail gets special praise for being well-maintained, and the landscape makes it easy to understand why O'Keeffe found such inspiration here. Tours are a highlight, with knowledgeable guides bringing the area's artistic and cultural history to life in engaging ways that leave guests feeling genuinely connected to the place. The accommodations are intentionally rustic rather than resort-style, with room quality varying between historic adobe buildings and newer facilities on the Mesa. Staff generally receive positive feedback for being friendly and welcoming, though experiences can be inconsistent depending on timing and season. The peaceful atmosphere, labyrinth, and overall grounds create an ideal setting for retreats or simply unwinding. A few visitors note operational quirks like limited gift shop hours, and summer visits may be less enjoyable than fall. This is clearly a destination for those seeking natural beauty and contemplative experiences rather than polished amenities.
Everyone needs to visit here. Obviously the main draw is probably the work of Georgia O'Keeffe but there is so much more to explore and learn about as well. Spend a night. Do some hiking. Visit the museums. Take a class. You won't regret it.
