Ghost Ranch Horse Corrals, 280 Private Drive 1708, Abiquiu, NM 87510
The moment you turn off the highway toward Ghost Ranch, the landscape shifts into something almost unreal. Bands of crimson, amber, and pale gold streak the canyon walls, and the silence is broken only by wind moving through sage and juniper. Ghost Ranch sits in the high desert of Abiquiu, New Mexico, cradled by the Piedra Lumbre basin, and its raw, sculptural terrain makes it immediately clear why this land held Georgia O'Keeffe spellbound for decades.
This stunning location in Georgia O'Keeffe country consistently wins visitors over with its breathtaking scenery and excellent hiking trails that range from easy to challenging. The Chimney Rock trail gets special praise for being well-maintained, and the landscape makes it easy to understand why O'Keeffe found such inspiration here. Tours are a highlight, with knowledgeable guides bringing the area's artistic and cultural history to life in engaging ways that leave guests feeling genuinely connected to the place. The accommodations are intentionally rustic rather than resort-style, with room quality varying between historic adobe buildings and newer facilities on the Mesa. Staff generally receive positive feedback for being friendly and welcoming, though experiences can be inconsistent depending on timing and season. The peaceful atmosphere, labyrinth, and overall grounds create an ideal setting for retreats or simply unwinding. A few visitors note operational quirks like limited gift shop hours, and summer visits may be less enjoyable than fall. This is clearly a destination for those seeking natural beauty and contemplative experiences rather than polished amenities.
Fantastic day trip from Santa Fe to Ghost Ranch! Took the kids on the afternoon horseback trail ride. The views were unreal! Terrific guides full of interesting stories about the ranch. No riding experience necessary- they'll take the time to teach you what you need to know. Visited the paleontology and anthropology museums afterwards. Perfect cool off activity following a hot ride. Received an outstanding tour from a knowledgeable docent named Lauren. Appreciate that she showed the kids all sorts of cool fossils and artifacts! Made learning history and science so hands-on and fun. Be sure to visit on a market day if you want to bring home a treasure from a local artist.
