Taste Suzhou’s food traditions with more than a meal’s worth of dishes
3.5 hrs
Food and drinks, cultural stops
Discover how Suzhou’s long history of wealth and culture shaped its local food traditions. Taste your way through the city with context from your guide along the way.
Suzhou’s Sweet Start In a city where breakfast leans sweet, these fermented rice cakes are fried to a perfect crisp on the outside and filled with aromatic flavors like rose and mint (or a savory twist if that’s your thing).
Authentic Morning Noodles Suzhou locals have a daily morning ritual: drink tea, eat noodles, and listen to opera. This decades-old noodle joint is known for having the best broth in town, along with a huge selection of seasonal condiments served on small plates that lets the eater decide their flavor of the day.
Suzhou's Ancient Gardens & Temples While walking our way through the alleys and canals that crisscross the city, we’ll visit Suzhou’s only Buddhist nunnery and explore a secret Ming-dynasty garden centered around 5 “peaks” and ornamental stones from nearby Taihu lake.
Traditional Old-Suzhou Snacks Situated just inside the city’s ancient gate, this street used to be the center of business for traders from the “Grand Canal” which connected north and south China. Today, it’s the best place to grab neighborhood snacks like fresh soy milk, local spring rolls, Chinese donuts, and pancake-wrapped dough sticks.
Floating Wontons Eat at a famous “bubble wonton” joint, frequented by celebrities and neighbors alike, and try these delicately wrapped wontons that are magically filled with air and float atop a bowl of rich broth. You’ve never had anything like it!
Classic Chinese Dessert End the tour at a dessert shop popular with today’s younger crowd. Try a subtly sweet soup made with slow-cooked red beans topped with chewy glutinous rice balls.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour. Cancellations less than 24 hours before the tour are nonrefundable. Rescheduling less than 24 hours before the tour incurs an additional charge of 50% of the previous total.
Share requests at booking. Vegetarian options are possible but not always direct substitutes, and all kitchens use meat. Vegan and gluten-free diets cannot be accommodated. Severe allergies cannot be accommodated, and cross-contamination with nuts is possible.
Expect more than a full meal across 5 food stops, about 8–9 dishes in total. Come hungry and pace yourself.

Portland food tours done right. Guides like Herb, Michelle, and Evangel consistently earn high praise for their genuine enthusiasm, deep local knowledge, and ability to make every guest feel at ease. From Portland's quirky food cart pods to the city's thriving coffee and donut scene, each tour weaves together great food with real stories about the people and neighborhoods behind it. What stands out most across reviews is how often guests mention trying things they never would have ordered on their own, and loving them. Dietary accommodations are handled smoothly, group sizes stay small and social, and the pacing feels relaxed rather than rushed. Locals and visitors alike come away with a fresh perspective on the city. If you're trying to decide between tours, the food cart experience and the coffee and donut tour both draw glowing feedback, each offering something distinct. The guides clearly take pride in what they do, and that energy tends to be contagious. Come hungry and ready to explore.
Wow so much great food and Herb did a great job guiding us around the food cart pods! Our group of 3 so enjoyed everything- from the thai iced tea on the unusually warm day (from Portland) to the el pastor tacos to the chicken swarma and bavarian queen strawberry & cream waffle! Yum! this is the food cart tour to take in Portland for delicious food (with enough to take home for another meal or two!) Next I need to try the coffee and donut tour !
