Umauma Falls is one of the Big Island's most photographed natural wonders, a three-tiered cascade tumbling through lush rainforest along the Hamakua Coast north of Hilo. The falls sit on a sprawling private estate, which means visitors get an up-close view that feels both intimate and uncrowded compared to busier roadside lookouts. The surrounding landscape is pure tropical Hawaii, dense ferns, towering trees, and the constant soundtrack of moving water, making Umauma Falls a natural anchor for a day of adventure that blends adrenaline with serious scenery.
This zipline and swim combo lets you experience Umauma Falls from angles most travelers never see. You will soar across nine ziplines strung high above the rainforest canopy, with sweeping views of waterfalls, ocean bluffs, and the deep green valley below. After the aerial portion, the pace slows and the experience turns sensory in a different way, swimming in the cool, clear pool at the base of Umauma Falls. The mist, the sound of the cascade, and the surrounding cliffs create a quiet contrast to the rush of the ziplines, giving you a complete encounter with the falls from sky to water.
This combo is ideal for active travelers, couples, and families with older kids who want more than a quick photo stop. Adventure seekers will appreciate the height and length of the zipline course, while nature lovers will love lingering at Umauma Falls itself, surrounded by botanical gardens and rainforest trails. It is a great pick for anyone who wants to feel like they have truly explored the Hamakua Coast rather than just driven through it. If you are looking for a single experience that captures the wild beauty of the Big Island, a day of ziplining and swimming at Umauma Falls delivers exactly that.
Most visitors rave about the zipline tours here, praising the long, fast lines with incredible views over lush Hawaiian scenery. The guides consistently get shout-outs by name – people love how friendly and knowledgeable the staff are, whether you're ziplining, doing the ATV tour, or swimming at waterfalls. Families especially appreciate that younger kids can participate, and the combination tours like "Zip and Dip" seem to be huge hits. The property itself is beautiful, with Cleo's Peace Garden and multiple waterfall access points that make for memorable experiences beyond just the adrenaline rush. The main operational hiccup mentioned is that larger group sizes can mean waiting between ziplines, which slows down the pace. A couple reviewers noted the experience felt less personal than in years past, with guides focused on safety instructions but not much beyond that. There's one serious safety incident detailed in the reviews involving staff inattention that resulted in injury, though this appears to be an isolated event rather than a pattern. Overall, the property delivers on adventure and scenery, especially if you catch them on a day with smaller groups and engaged guides.
My husband and I booked the Umauma Falls ATV experience while visiting the Hilo side, and it ended up being his favorite part of the entire trip. From the start, the experience feels a little more special than your typical ATV tour because you’re riding through private farmland rather than a crowded trail system. You follow your guide across wide open pastures where you pass horses, cows, and even pigs, which adds such a fun, local feel to the ride. The terrain changes throughout, moving from grassy stretches to rocky sections and muddy patches, so it never feels repetitive or boring. One thing we really appreciated was that the guide adjusted the pace to match the group. If you want to take it slow and steady, you can. If you’re feeling more adventurous, they’ll pick up the speed. It made the experience feel personalized rather than rigid. Toward the end, there’s a short hike down to a beautiful waterfall area that feels tucked away and peaceful. Unfortunately, we had a lot of rain during our visit, so the falls were running strong and it wasn’t safe to swim. While that was a bit of a bummer, it was still impressive to see the power of the water and didn’t take away from the overall experience. If you’re looking for something active and scenic on the Hilo side, this is absolutely worth adding to your itinerary. It’s a great mix of adventure, views, and a little glimpse into local farmland life, and clearly a highlight of our trip.
