Things to do nearFort Pickens

Fort Pickens is a 19th-century coastal fortification on the western tip of Santa Rosa Island in Pensacola Beach, Florida, celebrated for its Civil War history, sweeping Gulf views, and miles of pristine shoreline.

Fort Pickens was completed in 1834 as part of a national coastal defense system designed to protect the strategically vital Pensacola Bay and the Navy Yard that sat across the water. Built from millions of bricks using a combination of enslaved and free labor, the pentagonal structure represented some of the most advanced military engineering of its era. When Florida seceded from the Union in 1861, a small detachment of Union soldiers refused to abandon the fort, and their decision to hold it made Fort Pickens one of the few Southern installations that remained in Union hands for the entirety of the Civil War.

The fort later became notable as the place where the Apache leader Geronimo and a group of his followers were held as prisoners of war in the late 1880s, a chapter of American history that visitors can learn about through interpretive signage and the fort's small but well-curated museum.

Today Fort Pickens sits within Gulf Islands National Seashore, meaning the surrounding landscape of sugar-white beach, coastal scrub, and emerald water is as much a draw as the fortification itself. Visitors walk along the top of the ramparts for panoramic views stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to Pensacola Bay, and the adjacent shoreline offers swimming, shelling, and fishing in a setting that feels genuinely remote despite being a short drive from Pensacola Beach. The combination of layered military history and exceptional natural scenery makes Fort Pickens a destination that rewards a full day rather than a quick stop.

    Tips for visiting Fort Pickens

    1

Visit during the cooler months between October and March to avoid the intense summer heat and humidity that can make exploring the open masonry grounds uncomfortable.

    2

Arrive early in the morning on weekdays to have the fort largely to yourself, as midday crowds and tour buses tend to arrive after 10 a.m.

    3

Bring water and sunscreen, since shade is limited once you move beyond the main archways and onto the outer ramparts and gun batteries.

    4

Walk the short trail to the fishing pier near the campground after touring the fort to spot dolphins, which frequently feed in the channel between the island and the mainland.

    5

Stop at the on-site museum inside the fort before exploring the grounds to orient yourself with the layout and to understand the significance of the Union garrison that held the fort at the start of the Civil War.
