Pine Creek winds through Pennsylvania's deepest gorge, drawing visitors with dramatic canyon scenery, clear paddling waters, and miles of wooded trails.
Pine Creek Gorge, often called the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, formed as glacial meltwater carved through the Allegheny Plateau over thousands of years. The result is one of the most striking natural features in the eastern United States, a canyon that stretches roughly forty-seven miles through Tioga and Lycoming counties.
The Pine Creek Rail Trail follows the creek for nearly sixty miles along a converted railroad bed, offering a flat, accessible route for cyclists, hikers, and trail runners. Side trails climb the canyon walls to overlooks at Leonard Harrison and Colton Point state parks, where the full scale of the gorge opens up before you.
The creek itself is a designated Pennsylvania Scenic River. Paddlers of varying skill levels find suitable stretches, from gentle floats through the lower gorge to more technical whitewater during high spring flows. Outfitters in the nearby villages of Wellsboro and Cedar Run offer rentals and shuttles.
The surrounding forests shelter white-tailed deer, black bear, wild turkey, and a healthy population of raptors. In autumn, the canyon walls shift through amber, orange, and crimson, making Pine Creek one of the most rewarding fall destinations in Pennsylvania. Its combination of geology, wildlife, and water makes it worth the drive from any direction.
Visit during late April or early May when spring snowmelt raises water levels, making Pine Creek ideal for kayaking and canoe trips through the gorge.
Try the northern stretch of the Pine Creek Rail Trail between Ansonia and Tiadaghton for the most dramatic canyon views with the least foot traffic.
Bring layered clothing even in summer, as temperatures along the creek floor can run noticeably cooler than the surrounding plateau.
Arrive at Leonard Harrison State Park early on fall weekends to secure a parking spot before the overlook draws large crowds.
Look for osprey and bald eagles hunting along the water, particularly in the calmer pools below Cedar Run.
