    More about Honaunau Bay

Honaunau Bay sits along the sun-drenched Kona coastline of Hawaii's Big Island, a sheltered cove where lava rock meets impossibly clear turquoise water. Known to many simply as Two Step for the natural lava ledges that ease swimmers into the sea, Honaunau Bay is one of the most celebrated snorkel sites in the Hawaiian Islands. Its calm, protected waters and vibrant reef system make it a sanctuary for tropical marine life, and its proximity to the sacred Pu'uhonua o Honaunau historical park gives the area a deep cultural resonance that lingers long after you have toweled off.

On the Deluxe Kona Snorkel Adventure, Honaunau Bay is the centerpiece of the morning. As the catamaran glides into the bay, the water shifts to a brilliant gemstone blue, and you can often see the reef shimmering below before you even step off the boat. Slipping in with mask and fins, you are greeted by clouds of yellow tang, parrotfish grazing the coral heads, and the occasional green sea turtle drifting past with unhurried grace. Spinner dolphins are known to frequent the waters around Honaunau Bay, and pods sometimes glide through during the visit, twisting and leaping in their unmistakable signature style. Between snorkel sessions, the deck becomes a sun-warmed lounge for fresh snacks, drinks, and easy conversation with the crew.

This stop at Honaunau Bay is ideal for families, couples, and first-time snorkelers who want gentle conditions paired with genuinely spectacular reef life, as well as seasoned ocean lovers chasing one more memorable dip. If you are looking for a Big Island morning that blends coral gardens, cultural backdrop, and the soft hum of trade winds, an excursion to Honaunau Bay delivers exactly that, leaving you salty, sun-kissed, and quietly grateful you made the trip.

Travelers rave about the manta ray snorkeling experiences here, with the crew earning consistent praise across the board. Captains like Craig, Rob, and Dennis get called out by name for their expertise and welcoming personalities, while guides like Vinny and Voss make everyone feel safe and well-informed in the water. People genuinely appreciate how knowledgeable the staff is about the mantas and local history. The close encounters with these graceful creatures leave a lasting impression, with many describing it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The logistics work smoothly too. Unlike other operators requiring lengthy boat rides, this outfit gets you to the manta viewing spot in just minutes, meaning more time in the water and less transit. Check-in is straightforward and efficient even with larger groups. One reviewer noted the shop location isn't directly at the pier, requiring some extra driving and prep time, but this seems like a minor inconvenience compared to the overall experience. Return visitors confirm the consistency of quality, with one guest coming back three times in a year.
