Round-trip shuttle, Admission
Skip the parking hassle and reservation lines with this shuttle tour to Diamond Head State Monument, Oahu's most iconic hiking destination. A comfortable shuttle picks you up from Waikiki and delivers you directly to the trailhead inside the crater, where your admission is already taken care of. From there, hike at your own pace to the 761-foot summit for sweeping views of Waikiki, Honolulu, and the Pacific Ocean.
Whether you are a first-time visitor or returning to Oahu, this shuttle tour is the easiest way to experience Diamond Head State Monument without worrying about driving, parking, or reservations.
The trail includes uneven terrain, steep inclines, narrow pathways, and stairs. It is not wheelchair accessible and is not recommended for guests with serious heart, respiratory, or joint conditions or during pregnancy. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Wear closed-toe shoes with good traction, bring a hat and sunglasses, and apply sunscreen before the hike. A complimentary bottle of water is provided, but bringing additional water and light snacks is recommended. Restrooms and drinking fountains are available at the trailhead but not along the trail or at the summit. All guests must use the tour shuttle; self-transport (Uber, taxi, personal vehicle, or walking) to the monument is not permitted on this tour. Strollers are not recommended due to stairs and narrow pathways. The shuttle operates on a strict schedule; guests who arrive late for their pickup will not receive a refund or rescheduling.
This is a typical itinerary for this shuttle tour. Pickup times and on-site duration may vary slightly based on your departure slot and pace.
Your morning begins at one of several convenient pickup points in Waikiki. The shuttle runs on a fixed schedule with morning departures, and your confirmation email will include the exact pickup location nearest your hotel, along with a photo and map link. The shuttle crew greets you, provides a brief overview of what to expect at Diamond Head State Monument, and shares tips for a safe and enjoyable hike.
The shuttle enters Diamond Head State Monument through the Kapahulu Tunnel, a passageway bored through the north wall of the crater in 1908 as part of the U.S. Army's coastal defense system. You arrive at the trailhead on the crater floor, where restrooms, drinking fountains, and a small visitor center are available before you start. Your entry ticket is already handled, so you can head straight to the trail.
The summit trail at Diamond Head State Monument is 1.6 miles round trip, gaining 560 feet in elevation from the crater floor to the overlook at 761 feet. The path begins as a paved walkway through haole koa forest, then transitions to dirt switchbacks as the slope steepens. Near the top, you pass through a lighted 225-foot tunnel and climb steep stairways, including the original 99-step staircase built for the military, before emerging at the Fire Control Station completed in 1911. The station was used to direct artillery fire from batteries positioned around the crater during both World Wars, and you can still see the bunkers, tunnels, and the 1917 Diamond Head Lighthouse from the summit platform.
At the top of Diamond Head State Monument, the views are spectacular in every direction. Waikiki's shoreline and the Honolulu skyline stretch to the west, the rugged cliffs of Koko Head rise to the east, and on clear days you can spot the islands of Molokai, Lanai, and Maui on the horizon. During winter months, humpback whales are sometimes visible in the waters below. You have approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes on site to hike up, take in the views, and return to the shuttle at the designated time.
After the hike, you reboard the shuttle at the crater floor for the return trip to Waikiki, arriving back at your original pickup area.
