The silversword plant, a spiky silver rosette that blooms once in its lifetime before dying, grows along the crater rim and is among the most visually distinctive plants in the Hawaiian Islands. The park's conservation efforts have also helped stabilize populations of the nene goose and several native forest birds along the mountain's wetter eastern slopes.

Hike the Sliding Sands Trail at least a mile into the crater floor to experience the full scale of the landscape and its silence, which is unlike anywhere on the island.
