Newfound Gap is a high mountain pass in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee and North Carolina, celebrated for sweeping panoramic views, Appalachian Trail access, and rich highland scenery.
Newfound Gap takes its name from a 19th-century survey that identified this lower crossing through the Smokies, replacing a higher and more difficult route. The gap sits on the state line and was the site where President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 1940.
The overlook plaza gives visitors an unobstructed view across layered mountain ridges stretching toward the horizon. The famous blue haze results from natural hydrocarbons released by the dense tree cover, a phenomenon unique to this range. Interpretive signs at the site explain the geology and ecology of the surrounding highlands.
The Appalachian Trail crosses directly through Newfound Gap, and day hikers often head north toward Charlies Bunion or south toward Clingmans Dome Road for rewarding out-and-back walks through old-growth forest. Wildflowers bloom along these trails from spring through late summer.
Newfound Gap rewards visitors in every season, from winter snowscapes to autumn color, and its accessibility by paved road makes it one of the most democratic viewpoints in the entire national park system.
Visit in early morning to catch low-lying fog rolling through the valleys below the gap before it burns off by midday.
Bring a jacket even in summer, as temperatures at Newfound Gap run noticeably cooler than in the surrounding valley towns.
Walk a short stretch of the Appalachian Trail from the gap to experience the spruce-fir forest unique to these high elevations.
Check the National Park Service road status before driving up, as US-441 through the gap can close during winter ice and snow.
Time a visit for mid-October to see peak fall foliage color spread across the surrounding ridgelines from the overlook.
