Things to do nearKaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park

Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park on the Kona Coast of Hawaii preserves ancient fishponds, sacred heiau, and one of the island's most undisturbed stretches of shoreline.

Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park encompasses roughly 1,160 acres of coastal land on the leeward side of the Big Island, preserving a concentration of pre-contact Hawaiian cultural sites that is rare in its completeness. The park takes its name from two of its most significant features: the Kaloko Fishpond, an inland anchialine system enclosed by a massive stone wall known as a kuapā, and the Honokōhau Fishpond closer to the southern boundary. These engineered waterways were constructed and maintained by Native Hawaiian communities who understood the local hydrology well enough to cultivate fish at scale, supplying aliʻi, or chiefs, and their people across generations.

Beyond the fishponds, the park contains heiau, or ceremonial platforms, holua sled tracks, burial sites, and the remains of habitation areas that together document a sophisticated society rooted in this stretch of coast. Visitors follow the Ala Kahakai trail, a federally designated historic trail that threads between lava fields and the ocean, passing tide pools teeming with small fish and urchins.

Hawaiian green sea turtles frequently haul out onto the black sand beach near Honokōhau Harbor, resting in the same manner their ancestors did long before the area became a national park. The landscape is austere but not empty, and the contrast between the dark lava, turquoise water, and bright sky gives the place a stark visual clarity. Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park stands as one of the most accessible places on the Big Island to encounter Hawaiian history directly in the environment that shaped it.

Tips for visiting Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park

    1

Visit during the early morning hours when temperatures are cooler and wildlife, including Hawaiian green sea turtles, are most active along the shoreline.

    2

Bring sturdy closed-toe shoes, as the trail surfaces cross uneven pahoehoe lava that can be sharp and slippery.

    3

Walk the full Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail segment through the park to take in both the Kaloko and Honokōhau fishponds in a single outing.

    4

Carry more water than you think you need, as there is no shade along most of the coastal trail and the Kona sun is intense year-round.

    5

Look for the Aimakapa Fishpond boardwalk near the southern entrance, a quiet vantage point that offers close views of native waterbirds without disturbing them.
