Build self-sufficient sea kayaking skills on San Francisco Bay
5-7 hours
Kayak, paddle, wetsuit
Practice the planning and on-water skills you need to paddle more confidently on San Francisco Bay from Oakland. In this 5–7 hour class, you work on safety-focused techniques for tides, currents, and boat traffic.
Recent paddling experience is required (Beginning Sea Kayaking class or equivalent, including wet-exit and rescue training). Minimum age is 16; minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Minimum enrollment is 2; if not met, a private class may be arranged for an additional fee—clarify the amount with Greetwell before booking.
Cancel 7+ days before start for a refund minus a $25 per person processing fee. No refund for cancellations less than 7 days before start. Full credit or refund if California Canoe & Kayak cancels a class or trip for any reason.
Come with recent paddling experience and a Beginning Sea Kayaking class (or equivalent). You should already have wet-exit and rescue training, be in good physical condition, and be able to paddle up to 8+ miles during the day.
Bring lunch and/or snacks, drinking water, closed-toe water shoes (no flip-flops), and a bathing suit or swim trunks to wear under the wetsuit. Pack sun protection, a hat, sunglasses with a retention strap, and light-weight gloves (may be required). Avoid cotton, and bring dry warm clothes and a towel for after you get off the water.
Your booking fee includes a kayak, paddle, life vest (personal flotation device), wetsuit (limited sizing), paddle jacket, spray skirt, bilge pump, and a paddle float. If you don’t own a paddle float, you may use a shared inflatable paddle float that you blow up.
409 Water St. Oakland
The staff here clearly knows their stuff and genuinely cares about getting people out on the water safely. Multiple reviewers mention JT and Sou by name, praising their patient instruction style and willingness to go the extra mile, like helping track down hard-to-find gear or rescheduling when water conditions aren't ideal. The equipment gets consistent praise for being well-maintained, and there's a solid selection whether you're renting or shopping for your own kayak or paddleboard. Beyond rentals, they offer lessons that work well for beginners and families with kids, plus they handle repairs and maintenance like drysuit gasket replacements with quick turnaround. The Oakland Estuary location provides calm waters with nice Bay Area views, making it an accessible spot for first-timers to build confidence. One customer had an initial hiccup with an online order that turned out to be a spam folder issue, but the team resolved it quickly once they connected. The genuine passion for paddling sports and commitment to customer care shines through consistently.
