Nestled on the sun-drenched Kona Coast, Big Island Abalone stewards the largest abalone farm in the United States. Pure, nutrient-rich seawater drawn from 3,000 feet below the Pacific and abundant Hawaiian sunshine create a natura...
This abalone farm near the Kona airport is one of those rare finds that delivers on every level. Tours run about 90 minutes, cover the full lifecycle of abalone farming, and include hands-on moments and a tasting at the end. Carlos gets mentioned by name repeatedly, and for good reason. He's clearly the kind of guide who makes everyone feel like they're in good company, keeping both kids and adults genuinely engaged throughout. The on-site food truck is worth building extra time into your visit. Garlic butter and chili oil preparations come up again and again as crowd favorites, and the sashimi-style abalone surprises people who've never had it that fresh. Sea grapes with yuzu sauce are a fun bonus if you want to branch out. The consensus is pretty clear: the abalone here is exceptionally tender, and it's hard to find anything comparable elsewhere.
We did a group tour and it was amazing learning more about the abalone and the farm. Our tour guide Carlos was super informative and we really enjoyed our time. Definitely try out the food truck as well after your tour!
