Carolina Polo & Carriage Co. offers a Charleston experience rooted in genuine local heritage. Owned and operated by native Charlestonians whose family history in the city dates back to the 1600s, the company blends deep knowledge ...
Charleston's carriage tour scene has some standout personalities, and this crew is clearly well-loved. Guides like Eric, Caroline, Richard, and Ricky get called out repeatedly for being knowledgeable, funny, and genuinely passionate about the city's history, including its more difficult chapters. The horses even get fan mail, with Picasso, Amigo, and Union Man Fireside earning their own shoutouts from happy riders. One practical note worth knowing: the city randomizes routes among carriage companies to manage downtown traffic, so you won't always know your path in advance. Several visitors actually saw this as a reason to come back and try a different route, which speaks to how much they enjoyed the experience overall. If you're looking for a relaxed but genuinely informative way to explore Charleston, this is a solid pick. The consistent praise across different guides suggests the quality isn't just about getting lucky with one great storyteller. It's baked into how these tours are run.
My wife and I really enjoyed the tour. Our guide Jennifer was exceptional and very knowledgeable. One thing we didn't know was that a city official randomize the routes (there are 4 different routes) so the various carriage companies don't create a traffic jam. We will take the tour again in the hopes to see something different.
