I highly recommend renting one of the jeeps here. We picked ours up at 8:30 in the morning rented it for nine hours and we had enough time to drive to Marathon, cross 7 mile bridge, go to the dolphin research center, the sea turtle Hospital, see some key deer on big pine key and still get back before 5:30 in the afternoon. Glenda was our rental agent and she was very pleasant and extremely informative as she and her family have lived in Key West for a long time.
