Piloting your own CraigCat boat through Mystic's waterways is genuinely thrilling, and most travelers rave about how unique and memorable the experience is. Rob, the owner and guide, clearly knows these waters inside and out, sharing local history and pointing out landmarks like the drawbridge before letting you loose to do donuts and figure-eights in the "playground" area. The boats themselves are easy to handle after about 15 minutes of getting used to them, and the three-hour tour consistently gets recommended over the one-hour option since time flies once you're out there. Expect beautiful coastal views, a good chance of getting splashed, and that perfect mix of adventure and relaxation that keeps groups coming back year after year. A couple of reviews mention Rob can be intense about safety, which most appreciate but a few found created unnecessary tension, especially for first-timers. One detailed complaint involved boat assignments and equipment issues that left guests feeling treated unfairly. Move over Gilligan...Rob's in charge, so this 3 hour tour doesn't end with a shipwreck and a deserted island!! No, No, No! It's full speed ahead with Rob leading the crew. This is great for anyone! Meet at Dock "D", at least 40 minutes in advance. Go over safety, operational rules and instructions. Your paid 3 hours are ALL on the water. Instructions are not part of your paid time, which is a plus. Rob is the owner and an amazing instructor and individual. He is patient and humorous as well. He guides you through the waters and is there for anything you may need. There is an area in the water, which he calls play land and there you can maneuver your boat to do donuts or figure eights to get more acclimated with your boat. You get to see so many beautiful things on this tour. You can see lighthouses from a distance, but you do not get off to tour them or dock for a picnic. Packing light snacks is recommended. There are shower houses and restrooms near the dock. Sunscreen and sunglasses are recommended!! Hats and visors are allowed, but you may need to hold on to them or they will fly off at high speeds. Rob is so knowledgeable about the history of Mystic Seaport, boats and the surrounding areas. He can offer suggestions as to nearby restaurants, local shops and ice cream spots. We had such a blast and he made us feel so relaxed, even though we were a bit afraid of being out in the open ocean to begin with and unsure about booking an experience like this. We are so glad we took the chance to experience this. Please be sure to TIP him. He deserves it. He WILL give you your monies worth! We lucked out. The weather was perfect! I suffer from motion sickness and vertigo, but I did not get sick at all from this excursion. Didn't even need any Dremamine!!! My husband and I will be back for the Sunset Tour!!!
