We stayed at Northwoods Resort in Au Train MI July 18th-25th in the Moose cabin. This was during the big Canadian wildfires in 2026. Th air quality on the drive up was bad and the air in Au Train was horrible. But our hosts in the resort were fantastic. They had installed an excellent premium quality air purifier that kept the air in the cabin perfectly clean and clear. We were very impressed with their service in this regard. We used masks for a couple days and then the air cleared and wow, the Resort and surrounding area are fantastic. Au Train lake is clean and loaded with game fish like Perch and Pike. We caught pike every day we fished, all were keepers or within half an inch of being keepers. Fish fed us for two dinners and a breakfast. The lake is windy. If you have a small sailboat like a sunfish, I think you could have an absolute blast. The wind never stops from dawn until about 8pm when it lulls pretty significantly. Michigan is famous for the mosquitos but they were not too bad, a bit of Off and a couple coils saved us from any unpleasantness related to bugs. the nearby town of Munising is adorable. There is local shopping, touristy stuff, and some great local shopping for essentials. Pat's grocery is expensive for non-essentials, but all our essentials were reasonably priced. We had planned to shop in Marquette but found it totally unnecessary. The Moose cabin has screened windows in every room to air out the house overnight. There is a mini-split AC upstairs but you probably don't need it. The front porch is nice and there is a great back deck patio. The fire pit is great for s'mores. There is a hose bib on the front of the house but no hose, so if you plan to filet fish outside, I suggest you bring one. The kitchen has al the essential dishes, microwave, toaster, coffee maker. the house had a gas range and oven and a large fridge with freezer, no ice maker. This house comfortably sleeps 2 couples plus 4-5 kids with no one on a couch or the floor. We only had 5 people total and we thought it was way more house than we needed. It is worth renting a boat from the resort. They kept ours filled with gas. When it rained they bailed it for us. Awesome. All our keeper fish were caught from the boat. There is a cute "outpost" nearby that sells amazing ice cream, it's great and it's cheap, perfect for kids that are tired after a day on the lake. It was cheap enough that we ate ice cream almost every afternoon. I think $3-$4 for a big cone. Lake Superior is a long walk or a short drive from the Au Train resort. It's work seeing, not worth shore fishing on Superior. It's beach, like Florida sandy beach. You should take a day to canoe the Au Train river. They say it's 2.5-3.5 hours, nope, it's 4-5 hours. There are latrines and beaches, the fishing on the river is great.
