Check in at the Flamingo Marina first to complete paperwork and pick up items like paddles and life vests before your rental begins.
Flamingo Marina serves as a solid gateway into the Everglades, with visitors consistently praising the knowledgeable naturalists who lead their boat tours. Guides like Lucky and John get specific shoutouts for their expertise in spotting wildlife and explaining the unique ecosystem. The backcountry boat tours seem to be the real winner here, with guests regularly spotting crocodiles, alligators, dolphins, and manatees while learning about the mangroves and their role in carbon capture. The sunset bat tour at 4pm also earns enthusiastic recommendations for its spectacular views. The kayak and canoe rentals get more mixed feedback. Some visitors absolutely loved paddling through the mangroves and had memorable manatee encounters, while others found the routes less exciting and reported seeing mostly mosquitoes during their paddle. The staff generally receives high marks for being helpful and authentic, though there was one complaint about strict timing and less-than-helpful service. If you're choosing between options, the guided boat tours appear to deliver more consistent wildlife viewing and educational value, making the experience worth both the drive and the investment.
Rented a kayak in mid summer 2013 and paddled around the Everglades for two days out to Coot Bay and around Joe Kemp Channel and Snake Bight. An amazing experience.
