    Itinerary

    Arrival at Kilauea Visitor Center

    • Meet your guide in the parking lot. Please arrive 15 minutes early to check in and ensure a timely start.

    National Park Pass Verification

    • Confirm that all participants have a valid National Park Pass. This can be purchased online or at the gate.

    Introduction and Safety Briefing (15 minutes)

    • Receive an overview of the day's activities, safety protocols, environmental guidelines, and gear check.

    Begin Hike to Halemaʻumaʻu Crater (Approx. 1 hour)

    • Enjoy scenic views as you desccend 500 feet toward Halemaʻumaʻu Crater, where you'll learn about the recent volcanic activity and its significance.

    Explore Halemaʻumaʻu Crater (30 minutes)

    • Take in the sights of the crater and observe any ongoing lava activity while your guide shares insights about the geological history. You will climb 500 feet out of the cater.

    Hike to Kilauea Iki Crater (Approx. 1 hour)

    • Begin your trek towards Kilauea Iki Crater, experiencing a dynamic transition in the landscape.

    Cross the Hardened Lava Lake (30 minutes)

    • Safely travel across the hardened lava lake, gaining a close-up perspective of the volcanic terrain while learning about its formation.

    Visit Thurston Lava Tube (30 minutes)

    • Explore the iconic Thurston Lava Tube, marveling at its unique formations and understanding its significance in Hawaiian volcanology.

    Gourmet Lunch Break (30 minutes)

    The 8 mile trek will total a 1,000-foot elevation gain and descent.

    Jennifer was very responsive when I booked our experience, and then Yvonne, our tour guide, was terrific. Yvonne got us all so excited about volcanoes! Yvonne shared her deep knowledge of how volcanic activity follows a pattern and the tools she uses to keep track of when the next eruption is going to happen, and using her tools, we could see that Kilauea was getting closer and closer to eruption as we continued our hike! Yvonne provided a light breakfast of muffins and fruits from her home garden, and hearty, delicious sandwiches for lunch from a local deli. Yvonne checked out our party of 5 (ages 31-65) and offered a couple of options so that we could choose the best option for our level of fitness. What we did (~7 miles including the Kīlauea Iki Trail + lava tubes) was perfect for us: a challenging workout, but not so hard that we felt unsafe. Afterwards, Yvonne even texted us about the eruption so that we could come back to the park and experience it! A trip we'll remember forever!
